Is there anything similar to XNA on the PS3?

Not really. You can install Linux on there, but you don't get access to the graphics processor so it's nothing like XNA really.

I found this on [eurogamer.net] forum.

Apparently, Sony showed off PhyreEngine at gdc last night (although not particularly much of it). It's a cross-platform development tool that runs on PS3 and PC (and recompiles to X360 incredibly easily). And it's free. And it integrates with PhysX and Havok. DiRT was made on it.

Now, if Sony use their brains, they could release this to the community as a homebrew SDK, it's free anyway, then have something like the XNA Game Launcher to launch games from on the PS3. Instant devkit. This would make XNA look like lego. And Sony did say they were looking at a way of getting homebrew onto the PS3 without compromising its ability to block piracy.

I am very excited about the prospect of this, it's already been used in fl0w as well, so hopefully us general public bedroom coders can soon get our hands on it :)

What about this? It's pretty old by the way and no news.

I've seen some Python libraries [1] that were to aid game development using the SPE's on the PS3, but these aren't officially sanctioned by Sony or anything. It would be great though, I have this excellent piece of kit on my desk but no real tools to work with.

I think Sony would be dumb to not even consider it. Look at how successful XNA has been (as much as I don't really like it).

Actually, better solution - something like XNA for the Wii. I shudder to think at how successful that would be given the sheer wide range of people who have one.

A large number of units does not mean success. There's millions of people on Xbox Live but Xbox Live Community Games isn't nearly as popular as Live Arcade. Part of the problem is crappy games that are being uploaded. You could expect the same problem if a version of XBLCG was put in place for the Wii. Dozens of Tetris/Breakout/Mario clones aren't going to be a huge hit.

There is also the fact that Xbox Live Community Games aren't available for download everywhere Xbox Live Community is. For instance, Swedes can make Xbox Live Community games and get money from the sales, but they can't buy any (yet).

Btw, shouldn't the best games be easily accessible, assuming the best games are the popular ones?

That really doesn't sound like something Nintendo would do, anyway. That company's policies rose out of Atari's failures and the industry's crash in 1984, and one of their goals has been to prevent the market from being flooded with crappy clones. (Another reason N64 was either a failure or an underwhelming success, in different ways.)

What matters more to someone developing for Community Games? A successful product, or the satisfaction of seeing their Pong clone on their 360? (I fully admit, I love the latter more than the former.) Would Nintendo now experiment with homebrew, giving what amounts to a restricted development license to hobbyists whose products might not be eligible for their certificate of quality, even if it is segregated from the rest of WiiWare as Community Games is from Live Arcade?

Well, it'd certainly be cool.
