Online game question

I made a long post with some questions a few days ago and no one responded. I'll try this again with fewer, more focused questions. I'm interested in developing a web based, turn based, fantasy strategy game. Preferably the game would be entirely browser based but complexity may require a download on the players part. I've taken two C++ classes and two Java classes. I earned A's in all four. I just started a two year web development program at my community college but my current classes are not computer related. (still requirements, however) I just want a better idea of what software packages I'm likely to need to put my game on the web. There seem to be countless programs for web development. AJAX, ASP, Apache Tomcat, etc. They can't ALL be equally useful for a game. I'm not asking anyone to tell me what to use; just narrow it down a little. Give me some idea of what 2-3 packages are most likely to help so I can narrow my research. I'll pick a language based on what web development application I end up choosing. Cost is an issue but not a deal breaker. I know it will be a long road requiring me to learn many things. That's ok. If no one in this section can help then I'll try again in the web development area, even though it's not geared toward beginners like me. Thanks in advance!

[lol] I beg to differ, at least two of us responded to your last post. [wink] I won't bother repeating myself here, so just check back at that thread.

Again, good luck with your projects. [smile]

Most likely you'll either be using Flash or Java if its browser based. If not, then I can't say what's likely anymore. And saying X is likely doesn't mean that's the only thing you use either.

There's no singular approach to your game. Tomcat may play a role, ASP may play a role, AJAX may play a role, PHP may play a role, C++ may play a role. Depends on you. You've taken Java classes. Why don't you focus on working with that? It works fine both on the client side and the server side.

haha Touche. I should have specified substantive posts. By substantive I mean ones that were able to answer my questions. :)

That sounds like a good idea. I'm just concerned that the game may be too complex for Java to be practical. I hear that big applications can get slow. There won't be intense graphics, just adequate, but there will be plenty of number crunching.

I thought I answered your questions pretty well. [sad]

Runescape is probably the biggest online Java game in existence. They do amazingly well; have you seen their graphics lately? I don't think Java itself is going to hold you back. [smile]

Twisol, how the heck did I miss that last reply of yours??? My bad.

I'll check out Runescape. Thanks!
