Description TREBL is a flash-based rhythm game I am currently developing as part of my capstone project. The game could be likened to a keyboard analog of Guitar Hero or DDR, and is played using the number keys at the top of the keyboard. Target Aim Free to play. Available on its own site, or from Newgrounds/Kongregate/other popular gaming sites. Compensation For musicians, a shiny picture of your album art and a link to your homepage/myspace/whatever on the song selection menu, as well as a spot on the homepage. For playtesters, a pat on the back and a shot at the high score tables. ;D Technology Flash. NEEDED: Licensed Music First, I'm still looking for any musicians who would be interested in submitting music to be featured in the game. I do not need anyone to write anything special for the game: I'm only looking for a non-exclusive license to use your existing songs in my game. Of course, if you're interested in writing something specifically for the game, you are obviously very, very welcome to do so! :] I have uploaded a fill-in-the-blanks Limited Use License that you can print, sign, then either scan and e-mail or fax to me, once we've talked. :] Music needed: I'm open to all sorts of music, as long as it meets a few simple criteria:
  • The music must have a coherent melody to which gameplay "notes" can be assigned.
  • If the music features lyrics, they must be appropriate for a collegiate environment (my future employers may be seeing this project, after all).
  • The music must be your own original work: not a remix of someone else's copywritten material.
Additionally, I prefer songs that have a stable, consistent tempo (the engine doesn't handle BPM fluctuations very well at the moment), but for exceptionally enthralling pieces, I may be willing to manually adjust to fluctuating rhythms / BPM changes. Those stipulations notwithstanding, I'm really open to anything. Things like dance and rock seem to come naturally with the genre, but I'd also love to experiment with other genres. Folksy blues? Epic cinematic masterpieces? Big band jazz? Quiet sonatas? One of the things I want to emphasize with this game is not just rhythm, but melody. Using 10 keys rather than 4 (DDR) or 5 (Guitar Hero) gives plenty of room for the player to experience wide, sweeping melodies or two-handed feats of rhythmic dexterity. If you've got a song you think would work well, please: let's hear it! NEEDED: Playtesting Secondly, I'm looking for playtesters: especially gamers who are already familiar with other rhythm games (Rock Band / DDR) and anyone who plays a keyboard in real life. At this point in time, I can benefit from any sort of feedback, and don't be afraid to offer your harshest critique: if there are flaws, I'd rather know now than later. Team Structure Me. :] Contact Information If you have music you would like to see featured in the game, there is a magical submission form at: http://www.trebl.com/submitmusic.php And please don't hesitate to contact me at: fex@fex-online.com Or send me a PM here, I check fairly often. I will take a look through your music as soon as I can, and get back to you about which pieces I would like to use. Once you confirm those songs, I'll shoot you a copy of the License, and after you've printed and signed it you can either fax it to me, or scan it and e-mail it back to me. :D Working Demo The working demo is online at: http://www.trebl.com/ Feel free to take a look for yourself! Feedback Bring it on, I'd love to hear what you guys think so far. [Edited by - TheArtifex on April 25, 2009 12:18:26 AM]

Many thanks to those who have contacted me about this so far!

To clarify on a few issues that a lot of people have been asking about:

-I do not need you to compose any new music, although you are certainly welcome to do so, if you want. All I'm looking for is non-exclusive permission to use your existing music in this game.

-This game is freeware, and given that I'm a college budget, I cannot offer monetary compensation. I will, however, put your album art and a convenient link to your website/MySpace/whatever on the song selection screen and the score window, before and after the gamer plays your song.

Additionally, if you do not have album art, I'd be glad to help you create some, in exchange for permission to use some of your work.

-The license file that I uploaded is extremely flexible. The current license simply lets me have non-exclusive permission to use your song in my game. The song remains your property, and you can do anything you like with it. If you're interested in seeing your music in the game, but are wary about the License, then please don't hesitate to contact me, anyway. I'm sure we can arrange something.

Firstly, great idea.

Secondly, can you ensure that material that is under copyright control will have the appropriate information denoting it as such?

It is a great idea to have content supplied by users of these forums, and I am sure many people, myself included, would feel they could trust you.

My only slight worry is for when the game is out in the big bad world though.

@tekro: I'm willing to take whatever steps are necessary to protect the material I use. I'm gonna go swing by the legal forums and see what sort of advice they have to offer.

Fantastic turnout, I've got about 7 musicians who've submitted their work to be used, so far. I'll be getting back with each of you guys shortly to determine which songs I would like to use, and to get the license signed and e-mailed/faxed.

I've updated the video and the demo to demonstrate some of the work I've been doing lately.

I'm still eagerly accepting submissions from any other musicians who'd be interested in having their music featured. :D

Up to about 10 musicians now: I'm working on getting back to the ones who contacted me earliest so we can get some licenses signed and start seeing more music in the game!

Updated the OP with a link to the live demo, I'm now looking for playtesting as well as more music. :}

That's cool, but it's extremely difficult. I hope you plan on offering songs that are slower or use fewer keys.

Yeah, that's what the majority of my testers are telling me. XD

I'll put easy modes at the top of my to-do list so everyone else can have some fun with this. :D

Bee to the ump.

Due to extremely popular demand (ie. torches and pitchforks), I have shifted my focus to easy modes for the songs. Four songs can now be played on easy mode, and I hope to pump out at least 2 a day until I hit 12 or so, then I'll go back through and start hammering out some hard modes.

The live demo has been updated, of course.

Deadline is about two weeks away, and I still need to develop some sort of a simple website and some promotional material for this, which leaves me about 10 days to have this puppy ready to roll. Again, the aim is somewhere around 12 easy-mode songs, with maybe 5 or 6 songs also having hard modes. I think I'm just about done with the game engine and the interface, although I'd still like to spruce up the menus just a bit more.

Still keeping an eye out for musicians who'd be interested (and falling in love with tribeofnoise.com, by the way), and I appreciate all the playtesting/feedback I can get. :3

Now with 250% more AWESOME.

10 songs available now, and my inbox is starting to lighten up again! I'm still working on a couple of you guys who recently submitted, but again: if you're just seeing this for the first time, or if you've been on the fence about it, PLEASE send me your music! <3

Those of you who have contacted me and haven't heard back from me yet, bear with me: still digging through everything!

One more bump, hopefully my last!

7 days to deadline, and I've made some significant changes since my last visit, including some dramatically easier levels of play, some new songs, and plenty of changes based on feedback I've received on Newgrounds and Kongregate.

Once again, I'm looking for any last minute suggestions/critiques anyone is willing to offer, and (as always), I'm taking new music submissions.

I'm working on wrapping up easy/hard modes for the 11 songs currently in the game before I start adding in new ones, but I've got a nice queue going, and I'd love to add more music to that queue!

Give me a ring. If you've got suggestions, I'd love to hear it now, so I can make changes before the deadline! :D

Instead of making the tutorial mandatory, it should be optional.

For changing the menu I think you should be able to tap the up/down arrows rather than have to hold them

Using 10 keys seems too many (Rockband only used 4 keys) but I guess you are looking for hardcore players.
I found the notes were coming far too quick (especially in the tutorial).
I dream hard of helping people.
TheArtifex
TheArtifex
The tutorial is currently not mandatory, you're welcome to select any other songs! But yeah, I will add "single-tap" functionality to the song selection menu, instead of requiring a keyhold! :D

And on easier modes, only 6 keys are used and the notes move slower, a little closer to Guitar Hero's 5. :D

Thank you for the feedback!
