Hello I am new to game development and wanted to start with certain basics. I have decided to create a simple application that allows me to scroll a map which I currently will use an image to represent and to scroll this image using a simple application. I am looking to create a similar feel to the google map tool which allows horizontal and vertical scrolling of the larger image at hand. What are some good articles to read which will help me more with this? Any advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated :)

What is your programming language, operating system, etc?

I am looking at using C# with XNA I've done some tutorials but I am looking for something to help in regards to a scrolling map from a drop down perspective ala Google maps feel to it.
I just need to know what is a good method of accomplishing this? Do I use scaling and use some defined viewfinder to view the selected area?
Are there better techniques for what I want to accomplish? Any books or articles you suggest I look at?
I am not new to programming but I'd like to see what the basic techniques used to accomplish this are as this is not new territory for games.

thank you for any help.

One way is offset texture coordinates in your pixel shader by an amount set in a variable by your application, or based on time.

Depends what you want. You can animate a texture that way, scroll it across static geometry, and some other things.

You could also create a larger surface and just move in in a direction in screen space.
