Why always huge projects? - 2D Dev Team

I've been trying to find dev teams here that don't want to make another huge project like an RPG or a FPS. Many people don't think about what comes on their way. Also those people think such huge things are easy to do, like just search some people and there we go. All those teams say "this is not a project like others, this will succeed" but how many of those acctualy have? Those people think about one thing, Money. For sure, who doesn't like to earn much money? But why does this have to be on a way that will never succeed? Most RPG's take about 3 years to finish for real dev teams, for indie teams it will take atleast 5 years. And most people who join those teams will leave after a few months or maybe even weeks. Let's imagine you finished your dream game, which is totally good looking game with the best gameplay of all time and alot more. You finish your game and than? Who will play it? Maybe some of the developers, maybe some of your friends. But how will the game get known? Advertising is something most people can't afford, and even if they could, they only think about gaining money, not about investing into it. For sure, I would also love to create a very nice game and to earn millions of dollars with it, who doesn't? But I've been thinking and I've been lookig around to see what people want. I've looking on alot of websites and software. Rpgs and FPS are for sure the most populair genres, but as I just mentioned, forget those. Besides of those I found 1 genre that likely everyone likes. Puzzle. And not just a puzzle game like chess (those are boring) but Physics based 2D puzzle games. This is what indie devs are the best at. This can variate from you beeing a character walking around to get accross the map by moving objects, to beeing "something" that spawns and deletes objects to reach a specific goal. If you think I'm talking bullsh*t, look around on steam, how many indie FPS and RPG games do you see? Not much I can tell you. I've found a Puzzle game called "World of Goo". This is a game created by just 2 people who had an idea for a game, they didn't only dream, they kept thinking and not just thinking about the perfect game, no they thought about the perfect game that could be made, a game that had a good future, and not just dreams. They sold 1000s of copies of they game, just by beeing reasonable. So What about we start thinking too? I'm looking for people who are not looing to create the most epic of the epic, no I want people who want to start thinking, thinking together with me. Thinking about a game that is going to be finished. People with not just skills, but people who realize that the world of game developement is a way of searching for ways to learn, ways to be succesfull and not just want to create the epicness itself. The Teamname IndiX (Not Registered) Project name Together we will create alot of projects, all small projects untill we learn from eachother and untill we are able to think a bit bigger. Brief description: Most is descibed in the beginning of the topic, but this is everything together: We wil create games that are fun to play, not just the most realistic stuff ever seen. Together we will create free games untill we are experienced enough to create bigger games. Let the physics do their work! Target aim: We start of with free games. After learning from our mistakes we will create bigger games, no not RPGs or FPS games, no, we will create Epic games, Epic Puzzle games. Compensation: Credits? No I'm kidding, we will all earn money, but this will be based on your work, the time you stayed with the team and well... more things. Earning money will only later on. Technology: PC, and maybe Mac. Programming will be in C++ or flash, depending on the kind of game, browser or .exe. Talent needed: I need thinkers. Together we will first imagine what the game will be about. This is what we mainly need: At the moment we need the most 2D artists. Programmers: FULL! Story Writes: Let's think... 2D artists: In any kind of way. Web-designer: PHP programmers and designers. Sound Artists: Let's make some noise! you need to be on msn a few hours a week! Team structure: At the moment we have: 6x C++ programmer 1x AS3 Programmer 2x 2D Designer (Me) 2x Sound artist 1x Bussiness manager Website: Forum, which is located at www.mitsiee.co.uk/forum It's currently hosting at my own website, which will change later on. Contacts: You can contact me on: mitchel_jager@hotmail.com Previous Work by Team: Nothing yet. Additional Info: Let's be reasonable, and see that we cannt crate rpg and fps games, let's prove that indie game devs are best at physics based puzzle games Feedback: There is nothing wrong with dreaming, but some dreamers can't seperate their dreams from real life. I'm not english and my keyboard is kinda, well.., acting weird. Excuse any typos. [Edited by - mitsiee on December 29, 2009 4:39:10 AM]

thats true!
everything u said is true!

i have been working for 6 months to a rpg, and worse, paid project, small, but paid.
I just can create 4 characters, and i leave the project, for personal reasons.

Indie projects must to be faster, for the first releases, so on, the team must to invest what u earn in more titles.

well, i know 3d is a lazy thing too, but if u want, im a 3d modeler.

and I liked so much of adventures games lol! Puzzles are good, we are making 2 here, (as first releases) so we will make more...

ATM I plan to do the first few releases 2D, after that we will go to 3D, with a 2D camera perspective (like Trials 2 and Trine) so you you could apply at the upcomming forums (in the next week I hope) and than you can follow everything and can help with the further projects.

EDIT: We stick to 2D!

Yeah, if you are going indie then do an indie game! Trying to do something for free, which a commercial studio can't figure out how to do it for less than $15 million, is going be a tough ask.

There are benefits of creating an indie game, as an indie developer you have more freedom to be creative. How many commercial studios are spinning out the same generic stuff? Right now, it's a shame to the commercial world and a plus to the indie world that most of the more creative interesting games comming out now are indie.

Think of something interesting not requiring any AAA studio assets, and already your chances of success have improved immensely over trying to do something massive.

Wise words Jay, good to see I'm not the only one around here that's not thinking in $$ but thinking in what is reasonable, and still very populair.

If you think chess is boring you know nothing at all about games.

Sir, u miss understood the whole topic. I mentioned chess as a puzzle game, but right after it I said chess is boring

"And not just a puzzle game like chess (those are boring) but Physics based 2D puzzle games."
