I'm not entirely sure that I understand what you mean by 'incorporating functionality to flash'. It is very much possible to have Flash communicate with the server (PHP) and vice versa. Either by using FlashVars (server to client) or URLLoader (client to server), or by using a remoting solution like AMFPHP.

I found a way around what I wanted using php and flash but thanks for the useful information :)
