I implemented shadowmaps, I'm using a ortho projection for rendering a shadowmap of the sun light, but I see that there's lot of wasted detail, zones in the shadowmap that are not visible, also I need to increase the shadow map size to 4096 in order to get rid of the pixelated result.

How should one determine the correct projection to use, in order to maximize detail and avoid things that are out of the sight of the camera?

Ideally, the shadow maps would be done at camera screen space, so every pixel matches perfectly, I've seen some demos that seem to do this, but I can't understand how it's done.

You might want to look into something like Cascaded Shadow Maps which let you distribute where you need the detail - objects up close get the most amount of resolution.
