This may be one of the signs of the end of days, but it looks like Duke Nukem Forever is almost done. It looks like Gearbox has a working version debuting at PAX.

I'm kind of glad Grarbox is doing it. I'd much rather have Borderlands-style humor than Duke Nukem 3D humor, myself.

The Gearbox boss also related his wife's insistence that he take up Duke's cause and that if he succeeded in making it happen, she'd give him – and this a direct quote – a "Chilean Miner." She would "go down the shaft and stay 'til Christmas."

I like this guy.

Gearbox is a good choice of developer for the Duke Nukem franchise. They've got a style that fits in well with Duke, plus they're almost certain to, y'know, actually ship the damn thing.

Still can't shake the feeling though that this is an early sign of the Apocalypse.

We'll know for sure when they delay the game until Q1 2012.

Q3 I think would be more accurate. Isn't the mayan prediction supposed to be in september sometime?

By "mayan prediction" you mean end of mayan calendar cycle, yes it's in December.

That would actually be the right amount of funny, shipping DNF 3 days before the world implodes and everyone bursts into flames. We might even get our own entry in Encyclopedia Galactica: Earth - the place that wasn't afraid to show the Universe the true meaning of irony. RIP.

What I'm wondering is, is this actually a continuation of the DNF that was developed for many years at 3DR, or have Gearbox developed something independently which will now be released as DNF?

Previously it was rumoured that Gearbox were working on a different Duke game (which is not unheard of, since there's been several 'minor' Duke games created and released by other companies while 3DR were working on DNF). I wonder if after the collapse of 3DR they've decided to rebrand this 'other' Duke game as DNF to actually release something.

I doubt that Gearbox could just pick up the half-finished mess that was 3DR's Duke and finish it off to a publishable quality in the 6 months they've had - especially considering that it's an entirely alien codebase and toolchain with none of the original artists/programmers/designers around to explain how it all fits together.

Edit: The screenshots show a lot of open, high-poly environments with nice soft shadows and a variety of materials, which certainly wasn't the Doom3 engine's forte, but the Borderlands/Unreal engine was much more adept at pulling off. And the article mentions some heavy depth-of-field which was another Borderlands trademark.

I'd guess this is either a Gearbox-developed Duke with the DNF name slapped on, or a hasty port of the DNF assets into the Borderlands engine.

Some of the scenes from the demo I can recall from all the material that was being released when 3DR closed it's doors, so it seems to be the same game.

It will certainly be insult to injury for 3drealms if gearbox can finish DNF in one year.

They were working on another Duke Nukem game before Forever got passed on to them. So they are technically working on two right now.

The full story is that the most recent iteration of 3DR's DNF was actually on schedule for an early 2010 release, it's just that they (Understandably) ran out of money. Many of the developers went to found Triptych, which then continued development (And reportedly 'finished' the PC version), then Gearbox stepped in and did some polish and the 360/PS3 ports.

If you'll forgive the horribly written source:

Nope, they're still using the Unreal Tournament engine. Apparently the engine is so heavily modified the only things that actually remain of the original UT are Unrealscript and the editor. The Doom 3 engine was never even considered.

Now that makes me wonder if they'll port it to the UE3 engine..... hopefully no one from the team heard me [flaming]

Also, this is one game for which I wouldn't mind reading a book on its history. It has all the epic elements of being a tragedy, a comedy, and possibly an educational project management horror story.

Most of the story is already available.
