Hi, I am a freshman in high school and know that I want to major in some kind of computer programming. What I was wondering was what kinds of things do colleges look for to decide who to take and what componies look for. I was just thinking and relized that I do nothing besides my own time, when I program. I do nothing that the schools and employers will say "Goooood, You participated in ......", "joined the ........." etc. Any and all help is welcomed. Tazzel3d ~ Zach
depends on what you major in. in order to broaden your chances, i recommend you go in as "undeclared" and once you''re in the school of you choice, choose your major.

good SAT or ACT scores.

decent transcript and some extracurriculars
Most coledges look for proper spelling.
Well, if you can spell right, and you actually have good thought processing....

Hey, you could join the web-team if you dont have one. Then get your name around school as one who can be a fix-it and helper on things. With those names, you can get good recommendations and possible help if those people who recommend you have "friends in higher places"

Take any and all courses dealing with programming, and try to get calculus courses in by your senior year. I want to be a webmaster or a backup of a computer programmer (software, from games to business apps, but there''s a slim chance for everyone to get into the gaming world unless you are "in the right place at the right time."

as for companies, look into beta testing things, sign up for as much as you can and show yourself by finding bugs with precise descriptions. That can help you, if a company asks you to come back several times, they might hire you as a tech. You can also put your name in ads as a small time programmer or web site designer, and there are some websites that lists job offerings that you can find.

pretty much all i can think of.

Most colleges look at SAT or ACT scores & high school class ranking. High profile universities will also look at SAT II’s and essays. Industry specific colleges will often request portfolios (especially artistic and architectural colleges).

The corporate world looks for the closest skill-set & price match they can find in the time they have to look. They like to hire people who can "play well with others", do what they're told, and complete what they start (which seems inordinately difficult to do, despite how easy it sounds). They like to see decent GPA's, completed projects, and good engineering sense, when relevent experience is not available.
