DREAM act!

I have a friend who is an illegal immigrant. They were brought here as a child. When they told me I started researching it very hard trying to find some way that they could become legal. I became very depress because I realized there was no hope for them unless the DREAM act passed.

Today I was just thinking about it and looked at the Wikipedia article about it and found that it had passed the house and was scheduled to be voted on by the senate tomorrow at 11am! I want it to pass more than I have ever wanted anything in my life! I'm just wondering how long it will take for it to go into law after it passes the senate since my friend has already been caught for driving without a licence twice and if they get caught again they will never be legal...

So any idea how long it will take to go into law and what are your thoughts about it?

I saw that. I got some e-mail broadcast solicitation for donations for the DREAM act campaign fun from el Presidente.

I donated $25 (it was all I had handy).

It's not going to pass the senate, sorry. And even if it did pass do you think it would stop harassment and such from police and others in North Carolina?

Immigration is a ridiculous joke in this country, but it's never going to be fixed just like the 10000s of other things that congress would rather ignore to save their pet projects and federal pensions.

Lots of cops are dicks, especially southern cops, especially small town, so why in the world would the DREAM act be expected to do anything about that? Do you also expect it to make taxes fun? Make kids prefer unsalted boiled vegetables to chocolate? Dogs bark less?

You don't have to be mexican or black or whatever for a cop to be a dick. If that's the standard you're measuring it against, then you're just too hard to please.

Give your friend a bike and help him/her get a job in his neighborhood.
That is some good help you can offer, i think!

Tell your friend to move to CA. They love illegal immigrants out here.

Even if it doesn't pass something similar W/ more eligible parties will be passed in 10 or so years.

Just a matter of baby boomers realizing that immigrant skilled labor(medical especially) will be nifty in their forever young quests after they retire. And retired folks tend to vote a lot. quite a few 1st world economies will be starving for young labor of any sort.

Shall American Teenagers Dream Free?

Quote:

Pain isn't the first thing you remember about the policeman thwacking your arm with a bamboo cane. First thing is the shock. "What on earth just happened?"

Two weeks ago you're riding with your father in a rickshaw along a jam-packed street in Dhaka, Bangladesh when you see a few street children half naked, starving, skeletons dressed in skin. At once the rickshaws around you rustle with murmurs and shouts at the policeman beating the children on the head.

So you jump out of the rickshaw and say to the policeman, "Stop beating those children!"

You're a foot behind the cop who turns to demand that you stop speaking English. "Speak Bangla!" commands the cop. But you can't speak Bangla or understand what else is being said all around you as the policeman harangues you while the crowd harangues the cop.

Then thwack. That bamboo cane smacks a bruise on your arm, just below the left shoulder. There is no time to sort anything out. Your father tugs you by the arm and you run with him as fast as you can, escaping into the inexorable crowds of Dhaka.

If you are asked a question about why you did it, you reply with a question: "On what planet is it okay to beat children on the head because they are begging to stay alive?" But mostly nobody asks. You are an exile--a deportee--and you usually try to stay anonymous before the eyes that come near you.

As Ralph Isenberg tells you via cell phone from Dallas: "You may not be an American citizen yet, Saad Nabeel, but you are an American teenager." And who expects an American teenager to sit quietly when he sees a cop beating a starving child on the head? None of the American teenagers you know.

And yet, how is it possible to make sense of all this? Even now, two weeks after the cop caned Nabeel, and after he grabbed a tourist visa and fled from Bangladesh, he hesitates to tell people in his new place of residence that he lived as an exile in Bangladesh because he was deported from America for no crime whatsoever

I'm for anything that educates and puts illegal immigrants on record. These kids need a channel for progress and this seems a fair deal.

My problem is with their parents. The majority that don't pay taxes, run up un-payable medical bills, unfairly compete for American jobs (sub-minimum wages, no tax overhead etc.), weasel their way into welfare, and flee from car wrecks with no driver's licenses, cars registered under other people, and no insurance (this is very common - the father of a friend of mine suffered this exact scenario).

A program like this hopefully serves as an incentive to take the path their parents should have taken.

They may not pay the federal income taxes and FICA but that's the businesses fault not theirs. Also, they pay every other tax, just not payroll taxes. But, if they got a fake SS card, then they pay those taxes just like you and me.

weasel their way into welfare,

Given that 95% if not all that welfare (in whatever form) goes right back in the system, it's not as bad as people make it sound.

The parents took this path so their kids can have this opportunity. Not so they can deliberately be a burden to you. The burden is a side-effect, not the reason.

I don't see a single thing there that you can't see from people who aren't immigrants, illegal or otherwise.

As for 'unfairly' competing for jobs? How exactly is it unfair for them to work jobs that other people won't? If you're so jealous of the great and amazing job that some illegal immigrant has, why don't you go and convince their employer that you can do a better job for the same wage?

There have always been LEGAL ways to get into the country. Tell him to do that. I mean there are tons of people here from other countries as well legally, its not like Mexico should be any different.

I agree with the one guy. Have you ever been hit by an illegal immigrant that didn't have insurance? Nothing happens. I've actually heard a lot of personal stories from people I know about this.

Oh you do work, here come do construction for us under the table. Oh you can cook mexican food, sure hop on in. I mean I don't have a database of where illegals work, but if you think its just meat processing and farms, there aren't that many jobs. There are millions of illegals here, we don't even have a clue how many.

I agree business owners share the blame for hiring illegals instead of Americans.

And the argument that "they do the jobs Americans won't do" is incredibly naive, and a frustrating notion. My city is littered with grown men twirling signs in the freezing cold, feeling luck to just have a job. Ask an unemployed father what job he wouldn't do to keep a roof over his family's head.

A better argument is that they do the jobs that American business owners don't want to pay much for. The business owner may win, but the unemployed Americans lose.

That's what the minimum wage is for, no?

(IANAL) It's very unlikely that could result in permanent residency unless they originally entered the country legitimately. Even then, if they entered on a legitimate tourist visa, it could actually hurt them, since those are widely abused for this purpose.

If immigrants are willing to take the job for those wages, then why aren't unemployed Americans willing to seek them out? After all less than minimum wage has to be better than no wage. And why do employed Americans continue to support businesses who employ such cheap labour?
