I often hear about using one or two shapes for player collision detection but wouldn't more advanced games use a character made up of shapes? I know this is done for rag dolls but what about using them through the whole game? I say this because a giant capsule or whatever would be too fat when doing interactive things such as grabbing a ledge or pushing a box. Offsetting the animation is a pretty fair work around but I'm getting the feeling that it's an outdated pratice.
I'm sure it all depends on the game, but what about the more interactive ones?
