Hi there,

I am not sure if this Thread belongs in here, if not, please someone move it. I have not found something more fitting.

I plan to do a Turn-based RTS game for my next semesters student project. Problem right now is, that I don´t really know any engines which can be used for RTS game development. I am not sure if something like that would work in Unity or Torque.
One possibility I am considering is the use of the Starcraft 2 Editor which may be up to the task but I would need someone already proficient with it and the problem is that it only would run in the battle Net and I would really like to have a Stand-alone solution.

It would be nice if the engine is free but of course I am also thankful for commercial alternatives.

Turn-based RTS game

Do you know what the 'RT' part of RTS stands for?

What kind of class project is this for? Any 'engine' would work for any kind of game, it just takes the required programming to make it work. A full game sounds like a huge endeavor though, probably more than can be done in one semester.

Right...then TBS I Just thought that RTS brings people into the right mindset.

It can be seen more as a vertical slice, than a whole game.

A big consideration for the game would be mostly the time required to understand it and "rebuild" it to fit the basic gameplay. Of course it could be done in UDK, but that would probably be much too much work.

I've not used it myself, but the Spring engine is built for RTS games, and I imagine it wouldn't be very hard to implement turn-based game logic over top of it.

Unity engine can do pretty much anything you want it to, as long as you program it to do so. There's a couple of pathfinding and AI systems already written and ready to plug in to other Unity projects as well, as long as you give them credit.

The spring engine looks promising after a quick glance...i will look into that a bit more, thanks.

For Unity we would have some pretty talented programmers here...I guess i will ask them how much work that would be.
