N-Dev Games

Project name:
Survive: Rebirth

Short Description

Survive: Rebirth is a survival horror FPS that merges total player freedom with a compelling storyline. Players will be able to choose how they proceed through missions without constraints, subsequently affecting the storyline which adds to the replay value. The only constraint is time itself. The time of day affects the player’s strategy as well as the AI, which gets harder during the hours. The game also features a unique save system that only allows players to save in safe spots. All of the levels are to be designed in wide open sandbox style fashion, this gives players the option to explore or advance without feeling forced into events. There is one primary weapon in the game that is upgradable to the extent that it can become an all-in-one weapon. The other weapons in the game are secondary to the players’ main weapon; these include rocket launchers, grenades, pistols etc. The player also has the ability to add other attachments to their weapon from the weapons of fallen enemies.

Storyline Snippet:

The day was December 17, 2031. I remember that day well because that was the day my life changed. I graduated top of my class and was selected to be a part of United Nations Task Force. Three days later I was about to see yet another change I will never forget. The was room was alive but yet silent. We had just received our orders to perform perhaps our most difficult mission objective yet; quarantining off an entire island. The plan was simple, go in, shut it down and go home. I had done missions like this before but never to this degree. We all had concerns but wouldn’t dare question authority. The people who needed to be questioned were probably somewhere relaxing worry free. That always seemed to bother me. Sometimes it made me feel as if I was fighting for the wrong side. Hell, it was the fault of the powers that we were here In the first place and maybe the reason some of us don’t make it home.

After the briefing the atmosphere was different that day. Not just because of the fact that we may have to murder children, but that it’s so close to Christmas and some of us may not see ours again. I never really had a family to speak of so human affection is last on my list. The story is simple. The New Japan Government is the leading trader of intelligence in the world. They have controlled the trade market for over 25 years, but have recently been hit with financial woes due to the illegal trade crisis with Russia. They were in talks with the United Nations in an effort to merge and save their country and also seeking peace with Russia when they were attacked. Russia was the most relentless army in the world and was much respected but never trusted.

The Russian Army, headed by General Nikola Saiyjak denied any involvement. They had a long list of conflicts with many countries but none bigger than New Japan. During the last Cold War they accused New Japan of selling Russian military intelligence. The feud has never come to calm and today made it no better. After peace talks between the New Japan and Russian came to a halt, a deadly virus swept the Japanese Military forces as well as the general population. The outbreak was initially thought to be a form of H1N1, but was later written off as a foreign virus. Days after the outbreak the unthinkable happened. The virus began to cause Schizophrenic behavior within its victims; soldiers’ began killing of civilians and each other as well. The world was in a panic and the suits wanted things back to normal, or should I say back to profitable. And that’s where we come in.

Upon arrival our worst fears were materialized. The city was totally infected, and not only that but the Russian army has already started the job. Who the fuck invited these assholes. The tension was already thick enough to cut with a knife, so this only made matters worse. Seeming equally angered and confused, Sgt. Ross began relaying orders. I could tell by the way he cocked his rifle that this wasn’t going to be a group effort. I was paired off with Simms and Parker as usual. I didn’t care much for Simms but his marksmanship was unquestionable. Parker was the only female cadet to ever make it and she never let you forget. I usually ignored her boasting by watching her soft lips. Funny, how a trained killer found time to keep her lips so flawless. Anyhow, we had the south portion of the island and had to hike all the way. Usually we talked on missions but for some reason nobody said a word and our weapons readied. Perhaps it was the smell of blood in the air.

Once we reached our first check point things got weird. There was utter silence and just as the word trap went through our minds we were ambushed. A shot to the helmet of Simms, and another that hit a nearby tree was followed by a wave of Charlie. The team is nearly wiped out but I managed to escape through the jungle. As I raced through the trees the heavy night fog restricted my vision, but I blindly darted through the foliage looking for an escape. I could hear the chatter of the radios from the soldiers closing in and see the lasers from their rifles ripping through the fog. Suddenly I heard gunfire erupt followed by the screams of what sounded like a woman. I dared not look back but just as I slowed to radio for help I caught a glimpse of something dashing through the fog. I readied my weapon and cautiously crept through what seemed like it was going to be my grave. I came to an old pump station where I found some old radio equipment. This was perfect since our radios were local only and couldn’t reach off the island. I attempted to radio in the situation to base but somehow it was picked up by the Russians frequency monitor. They promised that help was on the way but I wasn’t born yesterday and I wasn’t going to die today. The radio chatter is now closer and joined by the sound of footsteps. The smell of blood in the air is now overwhelmed by the smell of fear.

I noticed a shaft large enough for me to fit through, where it led to didn't matter at this point. As I crawled across the floor the broken glass for the old windows shattered under my weight. The adrenaline in my body was at its peak so I didn't even concern my self with the sound revealing my position. The only thing left to worry about is death and it appeared to have entered the building five strong. I could here them radioing in coordinates and breaking into formations. This meant soon the dogs were on they way and if they didn't find me the dogs would for sure. I removed my rifle and threw it into the dark shaft, funny how timing works. Just as I entered the shaft The door to my hideout was blown open, followed by shouts and gunfire. I took a hit to my leg and instinctively reached for my side arm. Just as I went to fire the shouting had stopped and there were no signs of my assailant. Panicking, I fired off six rounds into the empty doorway. Still silence. I dropped my head back in pain and closed my eyes to ease it. Right as I opened my eyes I was struck by what seemed like the hand of god. Dazed and confused I felt myself being dragged out of my escape route. The blood in my eyes cleared just in time for me to catch a glimpse of a rifle being aimed at my head. It must have been all adrenaline now because at that point I simultaneously rolled out of the way while striking my attacker with the but of my pistol. He immediately grabbed his face which allowed me to empty my remaining ammo in it. Now I could here the cavalry getting closer. I was in no shape to match their fire power and too weak from my wound. I gathered myself and blindly rushed into the dark shaft.

After crawling into that vent I figured my pain was on hold for the time being. Wrong. Who ever said there's always light at the end of the tunnel must have fallen down this same shaft. I must have fallen 10 feet or so because I could see the opening in the ceiling. The last thing I could remember was darkness and then a massive flash of light. I knew I wasn't dead so I would be foolish to lay here and wait on it. If they hadn't followed me then they would certainly flush me out eventually. I could barely walk at this point but I managed to get to my feet and grabbed my rifle which had landed just a few feet beyond me. I shook the water out and stared at the endless tunnels and darkness ahead.

If the target platform is PC (I assume Windows; at that) there are plenty of free and just as effective libraries that can replace Unity3D.

Unity3D's major benefit is its high portability -- it's available on any platform that's open to indie developers (and I wouldn't be surprised if, with their current revenues, they manage to get their hands on official Xbox360 devkit and offer the library to official 360 devs). If your target is just Windows/Linux/Mac, there's really no need to pay for an engine -- there's tons of F/OSS ones out there that are honestly just as good; and most of them are better documented and have more tutorials and example code (lowers the barrier to entry)

That said, I've never enjoyed 3D programming; so I'm not gonna volunteer myself. If you ever need help in choosing an engine, debugging, or just a beta tester; drop me a PM. I'm interested in the end result, but wouldn't be of much use in the development process except for those (and even then; there's better people for choosing engines and debugging here).
