As I just acquired a PS3 I have begun to play Disgaea 3. I realised that something about it began to bore me when I was on to my sixtieth character or so.

There are only 6 weapon types to give them, and I've already used each one ten times. Where's the fresh appeal?

So if for the purposes of this discussion, there was no real limiting factor on the number of kinds of weapons, what would you like to see your guys using to deconstruct your foes?

Let's start with the obvious:

Sword
Bow
Spear
Hammer
Club
Axe
Fists

I'd love to see some crazy ideas for weapons here, but on the other hand, there's no point in saying 'Broad sword' if we already have sword. And for that matter, little point in saying 'Baseball bat' when we have club.

So let's see what we can come up with here.

Flamethrower
Grenades (all kinds)
rocket launcher
board with a nail in it
laser beam

I'd completely forgotten about modern/future weapons. Good call.

Boomerang,
Claws,
Greaves (a la Soulcalibur 3's Valeria)

Shadow Spirit: Your spirit "detaches" from your character, chases down an enemy and beats the crap out of it for a few seconds before dissipating.

Portal Projector: Places a "portal" behind the target enemy and one in front of your character. Your character reaches in and pulls the enemies' head through the portal, punching him a few times before closing the portal and "splicing" him in two.

Suicide Gun: When it hits an enemy, it brainwashes them into killing themselves. Could be reinterpreted as something magic for a fantasy setting.

Body-Blade Hug: What if your character could burst blades all over his body, like a cybernetic sea urchin. Grab an enemy, bear-hug him, then project your blades for +1 death.

Internal Carbonation Grenade (I.C.G.): Ok, this one is a bit ridiculous, but you asked for "crazy". Grab an enemy and somehow "insert" the grenade (down the throat, through the chest, or up the... well, you know). Shake the enemy quickly so the carbonation gets "fizzy", then toss him into a group of enemies and watch him explode and take the whole group out.

Drowning Cannon: A massive squirt gun that overwhelms the enemies ability to breathe. Keep it "focused" on their face for a few seconds and the enemy will drown!

Hmm... this is fun (if a bit on the morbid side), I'll keep thinking and possibly post more later

Are you saying bow as Staff?

If so.

What about

Bow and Arrow
Nets
Ball N' Chain
Lance or Pole Arm
Flag Poles.
Shovels
Sickle
Farming Tools

Then there are

Books
Pencils
Bricks
Boards
Nail Guns
Liquid Propane Tanks
Welder Guns
Glass Ware
Silver Ware
Knife Ware
Oil Cans
Metal Pipes
Sledge Hammers (Hammer Category)
Gardening Tools

This is all I could come up with for now.

Weapons in turn based RPGs are pretty much different only in how much damage they do. They RARELY behave differently/interestingly.

I don't think that's a limitation of the genre, though. There's no reason they couldn't behave differently, other than the designers never chose to make it so.

Here's a few ideas that would work well in a turn-based RPG that are a bit different than the norm:

Spirit Missiles: Target a specific enemy to attack. For each enemy within a radius of the caster, he "extracts" a bit of their spirit and launches it at the target for damage relative to their current HP. So basically, it's a spell that does more damage to an enemy when you are surrounded by foes. If you want to do massive damage, you have to let yourself get surrounded (a nice flipside to the typical turn-based strategy of "don't get surrounded").

J-Shaped Rapier: Designed to stab an enemy in the back while he is facing you. The average turn-based strategy weapon does more damage from behind than when face-to-face. This flips it, by doing more damage when face-to-face (by stabbing them in the back).

Theres a couple "real" medieval that i have come across that are interesting.

The gun shield: Well the name says it all. Its a metal disc with a flintlock pistol built into the front. It means that if you hold it up in front of you to block it also allows you to get a good shot off at the person attacking you. Heres a version.

The Lantern Shield: Kind of hard to describe so I'll let Wiki do it for me:

Born of the need to protect one's self from the increasingly frequent night time muggings, it was based around a small metal buckler some 30 cm in diameter. The buckler was affixed to the wearer by a small strap to the forearm; a metal gauntlet was also built into the far end of the shield and affixed with some long serrated spikes to help catch and break enemy blades.[citation needed] Beneath this odd complex of shield and spiked glove was a long sword blade, which paralleled the wearer's arm. It extended in front of the shield by some 30 cm and behind the shield to the wearer's elbow, and was pointed for thrusting. On the face of the shield a short spike was affixed to be used for short jabs. The center also held a hook arrangement, so that the lantern that gives this weapon its name could be carried. The lantern was fitted with a flap that could be used to hide the light. During this period in Italy fencers sometimes carried lanterns to dazzle their foes; training schools in the use of such tactics existed. The idea was that on being attacked, the user would flip the lantern open and blind the opponent in the dark of night.[/quote]

Heres an image of one of its versions. This seems to be it from the back.

I'm sure theres more. Theres a lot of spring loaded knives and the like that people seem to have created mainly for the purposes of surprise.
