Brief description:
I'm a versatile programmer who is looking for a 2D artist to collaborate with, to create and complete an interesting and polished game. I intend to be working with this on my spare time (a few hours on weekdays) and on most weekends, as I often already do, and I expect you to share the same kind of passion. Programming is my passion and absolutely want to further that. Game designs and ideas are entirely up for discussion, although there must be a tangible and reachable end goal.

Target aim:
Freeware / Shareware / Indie ... up for discussion.

Compensation:
No payment. This is a collaborative endeavour, any proceeds will be split evenly.

Technology:
C++ / Lua / DirectX / OpenGL / etc as a standalone executable (Flash-based browser game is a possibility).
2D graphics is definitely the way to go to keep things manageable, advanced effects is definitely a possibility. Content tools will be developed if necessary.

Talent needed:
I am looking for a motivated 2D graphics artist, I deeply appreciate pixel art, vector art and stylized graphics. But if you are good at what you do then I'm sure we'll find a way to put our talent to use. I'm obviously not expecting industry quality by any stretch, but I will want to see samples of your previous work. I personally have experience and good understanding of graphics and layout in general and will more than happily engage in discussions.

Team structure:
Me - programmer, tools, etc
You - graphics, etc

Contacts:
Please contact me via PM and we will continue via email or instant messaging from there.

Previous Work by Team:
My largest project to date is Expression 2 for Wiremod (http://www.wiremod.com) (a digital circuits addon for Garrysmod) which I worked on for over 3 years. It is a specically designed programming language and tool designed to allow players to build technically advanced contraptions while still being accessible to non-programmers. It includes a from-the-ground-up implementation of a development environment inside the game. It has since spawned a great subcommunity within the Wiremod-community, it has been a truly fantastic experience.

To demonstrate the scale of the project, here's the reference documentation (http://wiki.garrysmo...ire_Expression2, 620k views) and here's a video of it in action (http://www.youtube.c...h?v=usUm60w2pwA), but just search for "Expression 2" on YouTube and you will find lots of player-made contraptions, here's one from a very talented player (http://www.youtube.c...h?v=_-NNMI3eAmA).

Here's a bunch of other personal projects I've developed:
http://www.youtube.c...h?v=o_w04e0yAx0 (SmartSnap an addon for Garrysmod that helps with building accurate contraptions)
http://home.syranide.com/gamepic.jpg (Something minecraft inspired, fast dynamic lighting/ambient occlusion and realtime destruction, infinitely generated world)
http://home.syranide.com/light.jpg (Something terraria inspired, fast dynamic lighting/ambient occlusion and realtime destruction)
http://home.syranide.com/isometry.jpg (A quick prototype of a game idea I had)
http://home.syranide.com/pxeditor.jpg (Voxel tile editor intended for the above prototype)
http://www.youtube.c...h?v=LPlQcqSNx7A (A project with a few friends, I implemented the physics and made the editor)
http://www.youtube.c...h?v=12vnOR4PoxE (A roller coaster made in Garrysmod, I designed most of the scenery)
http://home.syranide.com/geoclip.jpg (An implementation of geometry clipmaps)

Additional Info:
I personally love what ThatGameCompany has done with their games and simpler games like Small Worlds (http://www.rathergood.com/small_worlds) and Knytt (http://nifflas.ni2.s...e=Knytt+Stories), very simple but yet there's something about them that makes them so much better than "they should be". I'm not specifically talking about platformers, but simply the idea that good mechanics and a bit of polish can make for really interesting games. Which is something I'm personally very interested in, not to create a game with the most features and the best graphics, but a game that is polished to the point that it just feels right (and one that can actually be finished by us before we die of old age).

Feedback:
ANY

Hi Syranide

Here's the thing I am a capable 2d artist looking for a reliable coderbecause I want to be involved in the games industry and form a long termpartnership with someone who has the ambition to go far as an indie gamesdeveloper, my background is primarily in illustration and animation and Icreated a few personal game graphics, (mostly simple ones) Although I havenothing to show for myself in the way of a functioning game.

Before I continue perhaps you'd like to see my portfolio; [color=blue]www.wisewonky.com

I am willing to help out with this game and would like to get to know youand your ambitions and also see what you think of mine in the process.

here is my email if you'd like to get in touch that way. foster@wisewonky.com, this is also my Skype email and my Skype name is wisewonky

[s]I've already been contacted by another artist as of a few days back and we've been talking a bit, nothing really decided yet though.[/s]

So, I'll have to turn you down for now, but that's some great looking drawings/illustrations you have there!
I'll keep you in mind if anything comes up!

Happy to hear it! Thanks!

If you are interested in joining a small group, we are working on a project that is just about the scope and tone you described, but we are working in 3d in XNA. If you want more info, visit boredomsproducts.com or email me at brandon@boredomsproducts.com. The project has been on hiatus for a bit but we are starting up work again!

I previously mentioned that I'm already in discussion with a 2D artist, it appears that he has become very ill and will not be able to collaborate.

But it was only discussions so far, so there are no feelings hurt.

Thanks for the offer, it looks like you have a bunch of great people there! Although I admittedly have virtually no "experience" with your japan/manga inspired theme, which may not be an immediate issue, however I feel that it most often is when one doesn't fully understand the vision. Also, I'm not really familiar with C# which may not be a huge obstacle, but it's one nonetheless. Anyway!

To the point, it seems like you got something great there, but I'm primarily looking for a "core team"-experience, of say 2-4 people and do something that's inspiring and motivating, not something that must necessarily be marketable.

Fair enough. If you change your mind, feel free to email me. We are about to begin searching for a programmer to replace our former contributor, and basically need someone to work with us until the end of the project. And, while we do ideally want to make the game marketable, our primary goal is simply to add a great resume-piece for everyone involved!
