Hello!

My name is Patrik and I'm from Sweden. I am getting really interested in game development and am interested in making a small game/level in UDK. I am interested in making a third person survival horror kind of game with puzzles. Silent Hill is a big inspiration.

Requirements:
  • Ability to make physics puzzles.
  • I'd also like to be able to play around with the light alot, complete dark rooms only illuminated by the players flashlight is key.
  • Some kind of post processing effect (I think?) which will add a TV static kind of effect over the screen all the time.
  • My last requirement is that it should be possible to have a camera behind the player character which can be switched for cameras with fixed angles - which can also follow the player around between specific coordinates - at certain coordinates in the level.
I am interested in the UDK engine since I have been watching a couple of tutorials over at 3dbuzz.com and am finding it to be a really nice engine to work with. Can UDK fulfill these requirements?

Thanks in advance and please excuse any oddities in my English.
    /Patrik

Bah, misclicked the like button instead of reply (enjoy the free rep i guess).

UDK should be able to do those things, there seems to be some image grain post processing effect available in there that might suit your needs, if not it should be possible to build such an effect with a bit of work.

Heh maybe it's the nationalism in you clicking?
Thanks for the confirmation. Have you played around with UDK much? How are the physics?

I havn't used UDK at all but i'd assume the physics are comparable to that of other modern engines.

[color=#1C2837][size=2]UDK is definitely the way to go. I have been using the engine for over 5 years now and I have to say it outdoes any other engine iv'e tried thus far including Unity and Havok in my own opinion. Not to mention very user friendly UI and Kismet feature. Cheers!

The physics engine behind UDK is PhysX. Check it out, though I personally believe it's more than enough for anything you could (reasonably) throw at it.

1) Yes. Through PhysX.
2) Yes. Through Lightmass.
3) Yes. Through the PostProcess pipeline.
4) Yes. UDK supports multiple cameras.

Can UDK fulfill these requirements?

Yes. More importantly, can you fulfill the necessary requirements for working with something on that level?

Thanks in advance and please excuse any oddities in my English.

Your English is fine.

Ah yes I forgot to check the UDK page. A bit lazy I guess but I wanted to hear what some users with experience with UDK and other engines thought and that's why I posted here.

Regarding my ability to accomplish something worthwhile with the engine; it's nothing I'm too worried about. I got time and am dedicated to learn the intricacies of the engine plus I'm studying programming and other computer related subjects at university at the moment and am comfortable with taking in complex information.

Thanks for your answers!
