register combiners?

Maybe I''m missing something, but it seems to me that all register combiners are good for is fast dot products. Nice for per pixel lighting, but is that it? If so why is it called register combiners, and not ultra-fast-lighting unit or something? Jesse www.laeuchli.com/jesse/
