Using a painter's drawings

So I just discovered some art by a certain painter(he is dead),but that art is also being sold.Would there be any problems if I'd make some models like he has in his drawings?

There could. How like his art will yours be -- will it be recognizeable? How long has this painter been dead? Have you read up on copyright law?
