Alright first off i have no prior experiance with programming so its a beginner question.

I am looking into getting into programming and have started learning some C++ but i have found it to be really difficult to get into it.

I have heard alot of people say that its always a good thing to pick up an easier language to learn at first and then go back to c++ at a later time.

Now my question is what language would be a suitable beginner type langauge that can still make games and would also be good to use in a general progam setting, as well as be good to know for the future.

thanks.

I agree - It's a good idea to start off with a language that's easier to pick up so you can get used to the concepts of programming. The ones I see recommended most often are Python, Lua, C# and Java, all of which have some good game frameworks available.

Java, C#, and Python are all fairly popular and useful in a wider career.

Java is a mainstay of schools in computer science. Also if you are interest in Android programming Java is the most direct language. Much business server-side software is written in Java, so knowing it can be useful if you decide games are not your thing.

C# is also good. It is a great language, and the C#/XNA pair is quite powerful, just look at XBLIG for a examples. It is wonderful for writing quick and useful game tools. Even if they don't use the language in their games, most game studios have a lot of tools written in C#.

Python is an interesting beast. It is very powerful. It is easy to use and also offers a lot of nuance. There are game engine tools like PyGame for writing games. You can find Python everywhere, but most of the time in the real world it gets used like duct tape.

All three are excellent languages that have long term value, where you can also learn to program without needing to know all the intricacies that C++ requires.

Im a new to game programming myself but im gunna leave my opinion here and its quite logical too:

I would say to start with C#. The reason being, is that it is a full blown programming language and you'll give yourself a chance to learn the concepts of programing. On top of that, Unity 3d uses C# for the scripting and that'll give you an engine that you can work with right away. Also C# is a higher level language and automatically does alot of the complicated stuff C++ makes you do so you can spend more time learning and building than tearing your hair out.

Here's a great turorial series about scripting with C# in Unity:
