Hi!

We are working on a new MMORPG game and we have loads of questions..

- Would you create different factions like WoW did (Horde / Alli)? All players together?

- How would you like to do quests? Killing mobs is too boring...

- Any new/fresh idea to level up your characters?

- Would you set any level limit? We've seen loads of mmorpg doing good without max level!

- and any idea / suggestion would be appreciated :)

Step away from your snowboarding side of speaking and back into your programming side.

I know you are Spanish and English is not your first language but ... look at what you posted from the perspective of someone who doesn't know you or is uninterested in taking the 30 seconds to find out who you are. You really need to think about re-writing your post, as what you have at the moment is too vague and without structure.

Edit2: I really hate that a draft is not saved when typing thus saving me the hassle of writing this all again.

Edit: On reflection of my reply here I felt an example might be in order:

Hi!

My team and I have been developing a highly scalable server & client system for use in an MMO which is now ready for the next stage of development i.e. building a game on top of it. The Server/client system can support [X] number of players and can be used in the development of similar games to [insert different games that apply eg World of Warcraft, League of Legends etc].

We want to build a new game incorporating what people want in a MMO. MOBA's are very popular right now, but we are wanting to stay in the MMORPG genre. It might include MOBA like aspects or features so any feedback regarding MMORPGs and MOBA's would be greatly appreciated. Some example questions for feedback include:

Questions

  • Fantasy? Humans vs zombies? Vampirs / werewolves? anything else?
  • Create factions as Horde & Alliance in WoW? All players play together?
  • Any "better"/funnier method to do quests? quests system?
  • Any better idea to level up your characters? Killing mobs is pretty boring...
  • Level limit? no limit?
  • Depending of the kind of game (question1), races?
  • ...

We are a committed team and have the resources to make a great game, what we need from you is feedback, ideas and other commentary that might give us some inspiration to design a game out of. Thank you.

For quests, I'd like to see more teamplay involved. Have a good storyline and allow multiple players to take part in it. I believe that's the strength of our medium over others, although it might not be easy to implement.

A sci-fi RPG would be cool because there are not to many of them. Fractions are nice as long as you can swich them if you pay enouth. Quests can usually be either get someone/something, or kill/destroy someone/something in most (mmo)RPG's. Level don't have to be limited as long as the higher levels are hard enouth to reach, maybe a "Completionist" level that is allmost imposobly hard and people will hang around there for years untill they can get higher up. sci-fi races can be aliens, but don't make them to much like common tentacle, 3 eyes aliens. Having many skills that work in difrent ways makes levelling up more interesting. I am no expert, but I hope my opinion helps.

ps. depending on what tools you are using, I can help. I am looking for a project.

These are game design questions, not story/writing questions. Moving this to Game Design.

In between GameDev, MMORPG.com, and DeviantArt, you could easily find at least two dozen people who already have mostly-worked-out MMO designs if you wanted to hold a contest of some sort. But the fact that you are asking these questions tells me you don't have a designer. These kind of questions are mid-level questions that can't be answered without deciding more foundation things first, like what general type of MMO you want to make. Trying to make a huge complex game like an MMO without at least one experienced designer, and preferably more than one so that subsystems can be delegated to different people... that seems kinda doomed. The more complicated the thing you want to make, the more vital it is to come up with a strong vision and develop it into a good plan before diving into implementation.

I want to help design a "sandpark" MMO. Optional interactive story with quests and deeply characterized NPCs, plus sandbox elements like player-craftable housing and lots of other crafting. If you are starting a design of this type, please PM me. I also love pet-breeding games.

After having this topic percolating in the back of my mind for a few hours I had some more thoughts.

If someone wants to make an MMO, these are the questions I think they need to ask themself first:

1. Why do I want to make an MMO?

----- 1A. If the answer is something like "I love MMOs!" or "I play MMOs more than any other genre." then ask yourself, "What do I love about MMOs? What kind of MMOs do I love to play? What MMO features are my favorite? What kind of game worlds are my favorite? What kind of role to I want to play in an MMO? Are there any single player game features I would love to see in an MMO? If there is one or a few specific games you love, what features do those have?

----- 1B. If the answer is something like "I really want to play an MMO but all the current ones are bad." don't just make a list of what you don't like. You can make a list of dislikes if you want, but for every example of what you dislike you then need to think of an alternate that you do like. Or you can go back to past games you did like or non-MMO games you like and make a list of what features they have and why you liked them. Make sure you would still like them now, sometimes your tastes have changed.

----- 1C. If the answer is "I want to make money/be famous." or "I want to program something." then you should probably not try to make an MMO.

2. If you only like one kind of MMO, that's simple, but if you like more than one kind, how do you decide which to make? Factors like the preferences of other people who might actually help you make the game, development cost, and convenience of what existing tools and abilities you have are best suited to make are the main factors to consider.

----- 2A. Sometimes making a choice about one aspect of a game will reduce options for other aspects. So, figure out what to decide on first. If there is any area where you already have one strongly preferred option, are any of your options for other areas incompatible? If so, eliminate them. (Obviously, your strongly preferred options need to be compatible with each other.) Then, decide the core of the game before deciding more peripheral accessories. What is the main gameplay? What is the main type of fun for players? What kind of players are your target audience? What is the game's overall goal (even if it doesn't have an ending or victory condition it will have one or a few main goals).
