Interactions with Video Sequences

Hello,

I'm a big fan of League of Legends. One of the biggest downsides to the game is a lack of practice modes. Recently, there was a video released, using the in-build functions of the YouTube video player to simulate certain aspects of the game. It was named "League of Legends Training Arena". It is pretty pathetic for the biggest online game in the world that there is a need to use third party programms to not be limited in your practice possibilities, but that's just Riot I guess.

Now, I want to make a program similar to what the video offers. I thought about developing a whole new game to create a practice environment for LoL, but that would be way to much work, especially for someone with almost no experience.

So what I'm looking to do is creating a software, which plays given video sequences, and depending on your interaction with it, changes the video sequence to one showing the outcome you'd have in the game with the same interaction.

If we take an example out of the video above, what I want to do is play a video sequence of an "Ashe Arrow" flying towards you. If you are able to hit the D or F key (you should be able to choose which one you want to bind "Flash" to before) in time, you flash away from the arrow. If you didn't do it in time, it shows a sequence where you get hit by the ability.

Cursor interaction would be a thing I'd like to implement, but not a necessarity.

My question is, what would you guys recommend me to do to realize such a task? What software do I use? Is there something I need to learn before I can do it? Or is the YouTube video player really the best option to actually create a practice possibility for LoL outside of just playing the game?

Thank you very much

The YouTube way is the simplest solution, if you really want another way, I would use Flash (having worked with it). This would just give you more control for the keybind, etc. It uses ActionScript which is not hard to pickup. Benefit would be making a desktop version of it with Adobe AIR or you could just upload the SWF to a website.

To optimize the video size, try limiting the Video FPS to ~24, and lower the bitrate. For each interaction you could stream in only the videos you actually require.
