Best engine/framework for point and click games as of now?

I'm planning to create a story-heavy and not-so-mechanically-heavy point and click game and would like something that would provide me with the possibility to create such a game. What is the current state of things when it comes to developing such games? I was thinking about Unity vs. Unreal vs. Adventure Game Studio. The last one seems the most tailored to the point and click mechanics but it seems not to be doing too great and it's also a bit stuck in the past with weird limitations like the 1024x768 resolution max. Unreal, on the other hand, is still pretty experimental with 2D and I don't know if creating something with such a limited mechanics in it isn't going to be more hassle than actually working. And then there is Unity which is most likely capable of everything but which I've had the most limited experience with.

I don't need anything drag and drop, have experience in Python and C++, created a few minor games in UE4, GameMaker and GameSalad. What framework/engine with not too steep of a learning curve would you recommend?

With Unity's NavMeshAgent, and simple use of Physics.Raycast you can build a point and click game very easily. I suggest going that route.

Flash isn't the most loved technology but I played some really good point and click games in it lately. Like the don't escape series.

Or you could roll your own native one in C++, depending on amount of features and customization you need.
