This is not funny, this is sad. It demonstrates Microsofts coding skills...

No, in fact it is not.

The Microsoft Foundation Classes are not designed to titilate newbies with ''Hello World'' programs. They were designed with Enterprise Applications in mind.

If you want to waste your time creating dumb apps go ahead and code them yourself, after all if you want to push a thumbtack into a wall you use your thumb not a sledge hammer.

I would very much like to see anyone come up with an application that supports COM, print preview, serialising, and socket ready in about 2 minutes, from scratch.

Creating an enterprise application takes HUGE amount of resources. Fortunately there are a number of libraries out there that facilitate this process with providing standard frameworks, so that the engineering team doesn''t have to waste their (expensive) time on generating code to do mundane tasks.

So, in closing, you select your tools wisely when creating an application. Just because you use inappropriate tools to generate something that doesn''t fit your aesthetic, does not mean that tool is pathetic, it means your are not using the correct tool.

I am not an advocate of MFC, I don''t like it so I don''t use it, but I am an advocate of utilising the correct resources.

Five lines. Same as in DOS.

After seeing his small-format games turned down for what turned out to be Tandy's last PC release, he took them independent, eventually releasing them as several discount game-packs through a couple of publishers. The packs are actually

That''s why I avoid MFC like the plague.

Console "programming":

$ wall "Hello, World."

A little more appropriate than just an echo

GUI programming:

#!/usr/bin/python
from Tkinter import *

Label(text="Hello, World.").pack()
mainloop()

Does it need to be any more complicated than that?

If you plan to write "Hello World" programs, then I recommend you avoid MFC. MFC is entirely unsuited for writing "Hello World" programs.

Frankly, I wonder what the market is for "Hello World" programs. There must be a big one, because people always seem to be upset if they find that a particular SDK or compiler is inefficient at making one
