This is not really related to anything in programming but I just wanted to know how fast do you type when you program programs/games. Do you have to be a fast typer to become a game programmer? thanks mate When there is a will, there is a way...

You do not need to a be a professional typist to become a developer. You should concentrate more on developing your applications rather than worrying how fast you can type.

You will notice after a long time of typing code, your typing skills will improve.

I can probably type 20-30 words per minute (slow)... yes.. I did lousy in typing class =)

The previous posters are right, I type maybe 20 words per min. It doesn''t really matter beacuase most of the time you''re thinking anyway.

There''s one guy I know who''s an absolute genius when it comes to programming, and he''s a hunt ''n peck typer.

I generally type about 80 wpm if I have the document sitting in front of me so I can just read straight off of it and type, probably lower when I just think of what to write in my head. That is in text editing programs though.

When I am coding, I probably type 20 wpm, but that is after I had thought out what that function was going to and that also doesn''t include the time I stop to ponder while I am writing a peice of code.

At some moments when I code, I know EXACTLY what to do and I can type it up at about the 60 wpm mark (I am guessing, the only thing that is accurate is the 80 wpm above since I do that consistently on keyboarding programs).

By no means do you need to be a FAST typist to code, but you need to be a diligent one. If you type at about 5 wpm now, try coding for a few days straight with nothing but pizza and soda , and your skills were surely improve (by doing that you learn where all the keys are on the keyboard and become proficient with them).

Coding really helped me become a fast typist and honed my skills at typing especially concerning the numbers and the special characters (I was never real good at those before).

If you work for a company, there is this 2 syllable word that may bring terror to many, deadline. You don''t have to be a fast typer to meet the deadlines you just have to be a proficient one. But, using one finger and having to search around the keyboard for 10 secs before you find the right character isn''t going to help you though.

Good luck

Whe i program i type at approx 40wpm, but i still can't touch-type...

EDIT - That was when i rated myself using mavis. When im coding tho, i do about 60-70 ...and i STILL can't type "properly"

---------------

I finally got it all together...
...and then forgot where I put it.

I type 20 to 30 wpm when programming. For most other things i type around 50 to 60 wpm, or as fast as i can think/read.

If I try my hardest to type fast I can go from 75 to 100 wpm (about 70% accurate, but when I look at the keyboard I mess up more.)

Normally, I would type about 50- 70 wpm with about 90% accuracy.

When programmming I type as slow as a turtle on depressants...

I think I see a pattern here...

Last time I used a typing program I was rated consistently above 60wpm (if I was looking at the screen.. if I had a piece of paper to the side I dropped about 10 wpm..... I hate paper holders...)
Since then I''ve gotten faster.
In times when I''ve been typing something that I knew exactly what I was typing I''ve been known to go very fast. I once took how long it took me to write a two page essay, and how much I had typed, and I came out to be about 100wpm...

The moral of the story? Well, like everybody else says, typing speed doesn''t matter when programming. Even though I usually type quite fast (although my accuracy has gone to crap lately) I doubt I ever type more than 20-40 wpm when coding. And I only peek up to close to 40 when writing algorithms I know by heart (bubble sort anyone? )

now my question to all of you.... How about those out there that have programmed in TI-BASIC on a TI-92? How fast was your typing then?

If I know what I''m typing, I''m often around 125wpm...

Programming, usually around 80wpm... 60 if there are odd caps... 50 if there are lots of numbers... 30 if there are a lot of number and odd caps.

I have a better question...how do you figure out what a word is when programming? : )

wpm doesn''t mean much when you use a lot of symbols...

not to mention functions inside classes..

CThisIsMyClass::ThisIsMyFunctionWithAReallyLongName(int value_A, double float_b, **char[] pointy_thing_c)

How many words is that? : )

I was kicked out of my typing class and almost my desktop publishing class because I type with only my middle and index fingers.

However, I typed a hell of a lot faster than anybody else in those classes (about 60wmp). While programming I type really slow.

I am surprised that people actually know how fast they type when they are programming. I never actually sit back and think how fast I type when I program. It never occurred to me to time myself. What happened to copy and paste? I am talking about piecing together a line of code by copy a variable here and then a variable there and add a couple of operators. Or copy a function prototype from the msdn and then insert a whole bunch of NULLs into it. Of course, sometime I spend a whole day writing like 3 lines of code. So, I guess one word an hour? ;-) Hmmm, maybe that is why I am unemployed. I guess I should type faster.

I type an average of 40-45wpm, but I find when I start using anything but lettering it slows my typing down a little bit. I slow down to about half that speed when I''m coding, just being to careful I guess.

If you just copied and pasted all the time, what would be the fun in actually coding?

You type in the exact opposite method that I type in . Most of the keys are only suppossed to be hit by one finger. But, when I type I''m already about to hit the second key by the time I hit the first, so each of my fingers has to be able to hit about 10 different keys to make up for another finger already in use for whatever key is coming up. My tying style is really annoying with sticky shift keys, heh. That''s why I always get extremely firm keyboards.

When I''m programming, typing speed is irrelevant, as the others have said.

If someone is dictating to me, I can do 50 wpm in the early morning, but as I wake up, it goes up to about 75. And if I''m copying notes from paper, it goes up to about 85, since I can read ahead of what I''m actually typing. And I''ve probably spent about 3 hours total of serious typing on this keyboard.

The moral of this story is: use a decent keyboard layout for easy speed and less strain.
