Brilliant game Idea of a GTA Primal.

I have a brilliant game idea of a Grand Theft Auto style game set in the prehistoric era, or a combination of prehistoric, ancient and medieval eras. more appropriately named. 'Grand Theft Horse'. You may think that this may be dull but, I have Ideas of the 'vehicles' that will be used. Not just horses, but also horse drawn carriages, open cargo carriages or stage coaches(passenger carriages), chariots, oxen, donkeys, camels, elephants, ostriches, (yes, you ride an ostrich). and sea vehicles like canoes, outriggers, boats, triremes, sailboats and pirate ships. You can jack any vessel or vehicle, travel between cities or villages of different cultures, and have weapons and armour of these cultures, swords, spears, bow and arrow. Cultures range from cavemen to medieval . You can commit crimes and get wanted then swordsmen and bowmen run after you. Cities range from villages with grass roof huts, to teepees, to medieval walled towns. There will be missions to do similar to any GTA title. Brilliant Idea no one has thought of yet, isn't it?

Ideas on their own are worthless. Everyone has ideas, but not everyone can implement them. If you were to have a working prototype though, then yes, it might be cool, or it might not be. It all depends on the execution. Average game idea executed correctly will be better than a great game idea executed badly.

Someone might take this idea and develop a fun game with it, and take all the benefits.

Yes. Someone might make a "shattered dimensions random violence sandbox game" in violent past eras, and not pay you for it. Is your intent to have your great idea used by professionals without compensation for you, then? It's unlikely any pros are going to rip off an idea some random person posted on the web.

Yes indeed! Red Dead Redemption and the Assassin's Creed series are nothing whatsoever like your brilliant idea!

Sorry for that. Just saying: it is definitely a good idea, but the tricky bit will be getting it developed. Your first step has to be to write it all down in more detail than what you've told us here.

look into assassins creed origins specifically. I thought about that game instantly when you told us your idea (open-world in ancient times, you travel by horse, boat, carriage etc and do missions all over).

While fun in principle, a game like that relies heavily on massive content and good implementation. If not there, the game will quickly become boring.

Why does GTA work so well? Since it's a goofy setting with fast cars and large living cities. Doing it in prehistoric times will work less well I'm afraid. There is less things to interact with, vehicles/animals are slow and not powerful, roads are non-existant so travel is more careful, and mayhem is much harder to achieve (no explosives, no police/swat to hunt you down etc).

While it's doable, i dont think the idea is "brilliant" :P

Look at far cry primal. While a quite fun game, it is more geared towards survival than explosive GTA-style fun. Squeezing the GTA-style into a caveman setting seems a bit forced.

@suliman It is not just caveman or ancient era, it is a combination of "eras" all in one time period. It is more like, different regions living in different eras. Cavemen, ancient civs and medieval people living in the early gunpowder age. There will be cities and sizeable villages with lots of people and things, gameplay will be fast paced, animal transports will be fast, cannons on ships, tribesmen with bows and arrows and swordsmen will be analogous to police hunting you down. So yes, fast pace chaos in this setting will be achieved. Romans built roads, so those, along with dirt tracks will be there.

Maybe no explosions except from canon fire.

Ok fine, but the idea sounds just like "huge game with everything in it, oh and also simply than AAA-studios releasing similar open-world games".

While possible, such a project requires a huge and experienced team. And the "idea" is not what's valuable here, the idea is super broad. It's more of a setting.

Grand open-world ideas are fine to have, but hard to translate to good, actual games. If you plan to realise this project, I really hope you have a big budget and has released some more manageable games already. It rings a "star citizen ambition" warning in my ears :)

Or as another example: "I'm gonna do a MMORPG. What's the idea? Well it's like WOW but has more of everything. Also, it's better."

Sorry for rant but we see a lot of these threads with grand ideas.

@suliman What do I need a big budget for? When all I need is a game engine, a laptop a few electricity bills, some free resources from the internet, and a lot of time, and no salary to pay if I'm doing it by myself or have a few volunteers help out?

This is what I've been trying to explain to someone else on this site, but let's stick to the topic.

Ok but when you mension all the assets and gameplay features it doesnt seem feasable to do this alone and with "free resources". Huge open world games are typically one of the hardest genres to produce. If you think you will learn game development from doing it, by all means do, I just say you will probably never have a finished/polished game that is fun for others to play (let alone possible to sell given what you compete against).

On topic: I still don't see why this twist on the open world genre would be particulary fun or even coherent, compared to other open world games.

But I will most probably have a finished, good enough, decent game that is with enjoyable gameplay, ( I do not intend to compete with current gen titles). By the way, you can rapidly create large open worlds with unity and its terrain editor.

Alright, let’s not get bogged down with hypotheticals and stick on topic. This thread has the potential to go off the rails as OP’s other thread. To summarize thus far:

  • Ideas in and of themselves do not have any value.
  • It is the execution of the idea that has value, but it also is where 1x to 3x the budget, the sweat, the blood, and the tears go.
  • Yes, someone can “steal” your idea, make a game out of it, and have varying degrees of success or failure, but hey also have to invest the resources into it as well.
  • Why hasn’t someone made “popular game X but with Y”? Because it costs resources or research suggests it will not turn a profit or the proof of concept proves the idea to be not fun.
  • People who don’t value their own time have warped perspectives about how games are made.

If your game and those other games are on the market at the same time, and share a market segment, then you are competing with them.

Anyway, as to your budget question, yes it's theoretically possible to make an MMO with amateurs and no money. Expect to run into a lot of problems that could be overcome much more easily if only there was money. And expect it to take a long time. AAA teams of hundreds take three years or more. Most of the cost is for the people, who are needed because of the tremendous amount of assets and code required.

But every case is different.

Unless you have less ambitious projects acutally completed (and at a reasonable quality level) behind you, diving into a super ambitious and large project as your "first, real game" seems naive at best.

@suliman I will develop and release 'short' demos of the planned projects and post them on the internet for free, if that is a good proposition. Two of the projects are actually quite short. I can develop them first, but It will cost upon release. Initially, I planned to release the PC versions of the games free, but after the outcome of the 'big' post I made here, I decided all games are going to cost.

Yes releasing parts of the projects as you work on them is a very good idea, you can get feedback and find out what works and what doesnt work.

However, you are still talking about several projects at the same time, as well as releasing for different platforms. It seems you are still very unawere of the scope of doing all this. Just start small, listen to feedback and you will in time progress towards your goals.

About demanding money for your games:
What in the big post made you change your plan to actually charge money? This seems very strange to me. Also, if you are not published before, it will be very hard to get people to pay for your first game (the competition is tough), and if you have less people playing your game you will get less feedback (and your games and you as a devoloper will progress much slower). Worry about this later.

You have not yet completed a single project it seems. The key here is to listen and learn from people with more experience. I'm not sure if you are willing to do that (as indicated from your other thread). If you are though, you can get lots of help from these forums.

sprotz, monetization of games is a Business topic, not a Game Design topic. If you want to discuss how to monetize your game, please start a thread for that in the Business And Law forum.

The pessimistic attitude and calibre of the members on here made me do it, almost made me doubt myself. I doubt there are any adults on this forum.

At this point I'm not sure are you trolling or are you being serious here.

Less talk, more work. You're burning daylight engaging with us mere mortals. So far you're just telling us what you think you can do, show us. As the saying goes, talk is cheap. Based on your previous larger discussion this game should take you about 3-4 months? Show us a working prototype in a couple weeks, prove us wrong. Easy! :) Best of luck!
