The Gamasutra Salary Survey: What Happened to It?

Now suppose the best pay is doing X, and you don't like doing X at all. You're going to work doing X for 40 years? In my view a higher pay doesn't compensate doing work you hate for that long.

On the other hand, if you do work that you really like, it's relatively easy to keep it up for 40 years. Also, as it has your interest, you may become really good at it, which could lead to higher pay as well eventually.

Is there another way to learn more about salaries … which domain is the most profitable one

I assume by “domain” you mean “specialty.” Google is your friend. Try Googling “video game programmer salaries” - try Googling “video game artist salaries” - try “video game producer salaries,” etc. The old salary surveys are unlikely to come back anytime soon. By Googling, you'll find that answers can be found on salary.com, payscale.com, glassdoor, ziprecruiter… The numbers will all be different, apples vs. oranges, and you'll have to extrapolate and realize that the salaries you'll find online apply to different levels of experience and different regions. Just figure that as a beginner you'll always be at the lower end of the scale.

But Alberth is right. You'd be a fool to choose a career based on salary ranges alone. Your skills and your interests are much more important criteria for choosing a career.

If you take the survey, maybe you can share some of the salary results (if they're available). I'd be curious to see how many industry people took part in his survey.

What I'm saying is, if you go to the site you find that the results are not shown until you take the survey and request the results. And I don't feel like taking the survey. You're the one who decided to post the link here, so…

LOL

So apparently the results won't be available until early 2023 they say.

But it's put on by:

https://www.skillsearch.com/

Just finished,

Beyond demographics, most of the survey is about preferred working conditions, and asking for personal priorities.

I posted this here as an effort to help the OP, and the community at large.

I am in no way promoting or endorsing this survey.

PS.

There also is a very personal question on if the individual has a mental health condition, or is considered “neurodivergent"

I'll share the results when i get them.

And, hopefully, a salary question. The Gamasutra survey was put together from the POV of, and for the benefit of, industry workers. This one sounds like it's from the POV of, and for the benefit of, recruiters.
