Anyone know a good book or web page that covers optimizing DirectX apps? I know a few things to look for, but I feel like I''m finding the information in such a piece-meal type of way and I''m afraid it will take me a long, long time before I''ll feel like my code is reasonably well optimized.

As said someone on this forum (greeting to him)
First implement THEN optimize.
So you might FINISH your game than look about optimizing it.
Of course you may have a look on this forum or on the net about common mistake.
At least make an dirty ALPHA version of your game that contain all the feature you may need then you will have a clear picture
of the point you may optimizing later.
Expending to much time optimizing dumb thing is a good way to never finish anythings due to the time expended to make this.
95% of game started here never finish... think about it.

Two cents

I agree with Dan, if you use common sense and avoid things you *know* are slow, then worry about functionality and completing your goals prior to getting into the nitty gritty. Heavy optimization early on, when not necessarily vital will also likely make your code less readable which won''t help the ease of development.

Also don''t obsess about optimizating initialization code that only runs once, for example on startup, if its neat and thought out its most likely fine.

Once your game is working and mature, you can go back and find out which functions are slow or seem to be unnecessarily large or drawn out and tweak them.

Common sense and forethought is the best form of optimization in my opinion

Definitely makes sense. Thanks for the input.
