What sort of game are you planning to create? You should pick an engine that fits your needs, not a *ultimate* engine that does everything... try to focus on your needs...

Sorry guys, that was my last post in the evening.
I forgot,I''m talking about 3d engines with the all the bells and whistles, particle systems,networking...the lithtechs and nubulas.

Thanks I''m talking of the most cutting edge engines, where it''s possible to make a commercial quality game.
I''m asking because I''m a game designer, and I want a good quality engine to play with a bit too learn techniques.
I mostly want too compile tutorials e.t.c. and whatever I can,
just to get a getter view of programming practises in regards to eventually finding some people to work with the engine on to release and independant game.
Something that isn''t going to require me too write tools to access will be the best .
I''ve had a good look but there''s alot out there, suggestions from users''d be great.

Thanks

Crystal Space 3D Engine is a great engine, free, and open source.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/crystal
Of course you could also you use Quake I or II
Note: All these require that your program is Open Source, if this is a problem I doubt you'll find anything free to use.

[EDIT - Andrew Russell] Not actualy changing the post, just read my message about crystal Space below.

Thanks, yeah I''ve had a look at that.I''m playing with Nebula right now,but it doesn''t seem as good as some of the other engines like lithtech. It''s seems like it''s well done though,
I just went through some tutorials, and used the shell to view a model I had converted to it''s format, added some lighting and a few keyframes of animation. This may seem like a joke but I found it quite interesting and satisfing to see it there,I''m looking for things like things like this to do,avoiding the full commitment of being a games programmer but learning useful skills.
Game engines seem like a good bet, because I don''t want to start with the usual stuff because then I''d just be a programmer.
At the moment though i still suffer from a lot of stuff going over my head.I understand the fundamentals and a quite a bit more about making a game, but am way off doing everyones job.
I don''t really want too but it seems it''d be easier too find people if I did.
I''m willing too learn more things but I''m just wondering how much I should know and where I can learn it.
As far as game design I know all I need to but it just seems a lot of people who want to start independant companies round here.
Want them to comprise of like 10 programmers and a modeler.
I need some direction.
All I want too do is make games, and I know given the chance I''ll be a sucess with the right team.I have other things I do but that''s my dream and I''m working with it in mind.
I''m getting older now I can afford to be just thinking I deserve things,I realise I have to work to prove myself first.
It just seems so daunting by myself,so it appear I need more skills to attract the right people, but there''s only so much I can handle.
Advice plz

Important note about Crystal Space:

Crystal space is under LGPL. This means that any modifications to the crystal space engine (which does graphics, sound, etc), the source must be released. HOWEVER your actual game code does not have to be released. This makes Crystal Space quite a good thing.

You can find the Crystal Space website here

On the other hand, if you have the $$, the Unreal engine is just what you want

Well then I stand corrected.

Try Quest3d, I''m waiting for them to release the sdk but even as it is, it''s still pretty cool. Here''s the url www.quest3d.com

-Also look at 3d game studio at www.conitec.net/a4info.htm

-Paniard Vision at www.panardvision.com

-Fly3d, it''s not got much by way of tutorials, but they''ll be out soon, www.fly3d.com.br/

-and ofcourse power render at the bottom of these forums. You need DirectX8 sdk though which is quite a big d''load (125MB).

Outta all these(and loads of others), I''d say power render was the most cutting edge, just something about it is stopping me from using it...not sure what but try them all out for now.

Hopefully this huge 3d engines list will someday be updated...
