Processor Type / Game Performance

Firstly,....I don''t want to start a big argument that seems to start when someone asks a question like this but I''d like some information about it. I am buying a new computer, not top of the line cause I''m on a budget, obviously I want it to perform well in all areas but mainly in Game performance. I''ll be using my Geforce2 64MB Pro I have at the minute. Basically it''ll be between a Pentium4 1.8Ghz and an Athlon XP 1800. Now I was under the impression that the Athlon XP 1800 didn''t actually run at 1.8Ghz but around 1.57 or something (I may be wrong). But after checking on 3DMark Game Performance Tester as far as I can see the Athlon performs slightly better even though it has a lower clock speed due to it''s ''More work per clock cycle'' or something. On my current system (Pentium2 450Mhz, 128MB Ram, GeForce2 Pro) my 3DMark score is 3880. When I compared it with an Athlon XP 1800 it got between 14000 and 11000 for the most part. The P4 1.8Ghz got mostly 11000 to 10000. The reason I am writing all this is because I don''t want to end up buying a computer that doesn''t perform as well as I can get for the money (The P4 being slightly dearer than the Athlon) and because I ain''t rich I wanted other people''s opinions before I fork out. Any info is much appreciated Cheers

I may post in another forum too, but since most people here know what they''re talkin'' about I thought I''d ask. And since I post reletivly frequently and know the people to be both knowlegable and helpful I thought whats the harm ?? Besides, when people are programming they often obviously strive for optimum performance in they''re programs which would also mean that some at least should know about this sorta thing. In fact, you can answer this post solely on your own experience with your processor and the games you play ! !
