Whenever I start my computer (Running Windows XP), the speaker volume is set down to a reasonable level. For some strange reason when the startup sound plays, the sound blasts at the highest possible volume and pitch for about a second, then settles down to the normal volume. If I were to replicate this sound in text, it would go something like this: (H = High, L = Low) ___--------------______________ LLLHHHHHHHHHHHHHHLLLLLLLLLLLLLL Since my spekers are amplified, I assumed that something is internally wrong, but when I tried fixed-volume non-amplified headphones, the same thing would happen. My soundcard is a SoundBlaster AudioPCI 128D. But wait....there''s more! My motherboard has an integrated sound device, and when I try it on that - I get the same result. _____________________________________________________ ICQ #: 149510932 Google - OpenGL - DirectX - Windows Guide Network - MSDN - Symantec Virus Info "Imagination is more important than knowledge." - Albert Einstein

Try installing the latest soundcard drivers. Maybe it''ll solve your problem. If not, the only thing I can think of is reinstalling XP. I sure hope you have a Windows partition only for windows and the rest for apps/data! If it messes up, don''t blame me. It''s at your own risk!

I think the volume is saved on a per-user profile base in NT/2K/XP. It seems to get something wrong when setting the sound level. Try turning the volume up completely software-wise but turn the volume on the amp down to a reasonable level. Then try again.

Damn thing used to happen to me too. It stopped when I upgraded to XP though.

I have the same thing with resolutions. Or rather, used to have. My advice? Don''t login, but press cancel. It will most likely blurt the whole tune at its maximum sound level. Turn it down then, reboot, and problem should be solved.
