DO you think we will get something like a holodeck anytime soon, like within our lifetime, what about other star trek technology like Warp drive, though I think the holodeck is the most reasonable. The holodeck is actually the least reasonable technology on Star Trek (not to mention it depends on the others). Maybe a ''VR'' system could happen, but not a room that you walk into, more like a device that goes around your eyes or plugs into your nervous system somehow.
Man, I''m such a nerd.

Transporters - the effect is known as "quantum superposition" - or something like that. Basically scientists have been able to duplicate quantum states. In another recent experiment, scientists were able to "breach" the speed of light - but only between two rays and only by 'bending' the definition of the speed of light. In another, scientists were able to create a supernova in a lab. And of course there was the recent splash regarding more 'cold fusion'. There have been some really crazy things discovered in physics in the last couple of years. There was a story at Slashdot the other day about the Air Force testing out an anti-gravity device. Pretty trippy stuff. Oh - and by the way - communicators are already on the market - only we call them 'cell phones'. And if you really want to get geeky with it, "spread spectrum analysis" looks like tricorders in the making.

I think there is actually not one single ''technology'' on ST that could even come close to being reasonable... Oh yeah, their communicators perhaps. We almost have that now (cell phones with voice recognition).

But there is always one thing I really wondered about: *where* are the super-hightech future-scifi _toilets_ in there ?? I mean, if they don''t have a single WC on the entire ship, well, it could become kind of messy out there...

What about the replicators that could fix a ton of problems

Quantum superpositions are not teleporters, more something like a gigantic and very fast memory. Teleporting perhaps through controlled quantum tunneling. But more for the information part (not matter), super-luminal communications could eventually become possible in the next 100-200 years.

[Edit] Deflector shields would be cool. The personal ones, that go around your body or car... Very nice.

Actually, a Holodeck is possible...there are already very nice holographic technologies. As far as things you can TOUCH, I think not for a long time. Although, if you wore a suit it could be done.

Yeah, but those who sell things would never let you have one. You''d have to pay for the use of the pattern to make a copy at a central location and then take that home with you. "tea, earl gray"

Yeah basically it would make our factories almost useless. People I''m sure would fight this. It might happen a hundred years after it was invented...

There are no bathrooms. The ''waste'' is automatically beamed out of you at regular intervals.
Well, I just made that up. Could be true, though.

Hehe... Well I hope their beaming positioning scanners are *very* precise, otherwise it could get somewhat uncomfortable, if they accidently beam out your lungs or brain...

Actually, given that we have ''unlimited'' energy supply, it would solve approx. all problems of humanity. There would be no need anymore for work, money, factories, nothing. Money and material goods would become irrelevant, you could get anything you want at any given moment. A kind of Life.NET Civilization would totally change. Would be weird.

Do you really think _they_ would let that happen?

Of course not, ''they'' would rather destroy the prototype... The sad thing is, that it actually is true: if we had access to such a tech, then it would never come out. Until the day, the blueprints leak to a future OpenSource community

The holodeck always seemed the least feasible for one reason: there are a load of episodes which involve entire cities inside that room. Last I checked, they didn''t mention any hyperdimensional bending of time-and-space in the synopsis of that technology, yet you seem to be able to walk for (virtual) miles and miles without running into even one wall.

Quoting the TNG tech manual:
quote:
"Substrate forcefield creates 'treadmill' effect, permitting participant to remain stationary while the simulated environment 'scrolls' by, within the limits of the simulation program"

and

quote:
"The shaped forcefields and backgrounds imagery allow the visitor to experience volumes and distances apparently larger than the Holodeck room could physically accommodate. The environment can be scrolled to continue if desired, or set for bounding limits indicated by soft wall contacts and audible reminders of wall proximity"

Also at this time, I'd like to point out that I keep a Holodeck in my room.

Edit: You know, I think they also mentioned this in 129 Elementary Dear Data. You know, the one with Moriarty.

You know, only one thing amazes me with the holodeck. They come up with a great explenation on how it works for 1 person. Then again, in several episodes, there are 2 or more people in there, and often the distance between them becomes bigger then the actual space in the room... I guess that would kinda annihilate the principle, err? ^_^

Oh, and in Star Trek, they got sonic showers! ^_^ And there was this one case in a Voyager episode, where all the hardware started to break down, and Nelix made a comment about "there only being 3 loo''s left for the crew, and that ain''t a good thing with several Booleans on board" ^_^
zuzuman
zuzuman
Nah, they just have the holodeck split up into "areas" and the holodeck voice says "You must gather your party before venturing forth."

Actually, I seem to kinda recall something about this. When the participants are walking away from each other or whatever, they are hidden from each other and their images are projected as a regular hologram until they get close enough again. I think that was in an episode, but I can''t recollectifize which one.

I seem to remember watching a programme where someone on the production crew pointed to that display thingy of the Enterprise D in Engineering and say, "And this is the toilet", and there was a tiny symbol.

Nice to know they''ve got at least one. So in the future there will be toilets, just not very many of them.

I don''t think they would have a choice.
All it takes is one person with the plans and those plans are all over the internet. I assume we will still have the internet in the future. Also, you only need one large replicator, and it can make many smaller replicators.

We will still have money. You will still have to buy a house, and land, and energy.

This technology is also not that far off. We can already ''replicate'' stuff in the lab. It is just really expensive to do so, and doesn''t produce very much stuff.
