Is there a way to check how much video memory is left on your card during run time? I know about IDirect3DDevice8::GetAvailableTextureMem(), but it''s EXTREMELY inaccurate. Does anybody know of any third-party functions out there that I can download? Or does anybody know of any way I can return the available memory on my card? Thanks! Ryan

there is no reliable method since you must rely on the video card driver to tell the truth. many drivers lie. you dont really need to know this information anyway. simple pretend that most of the video memory will be free while in exclusive fullscreen mode (windowed mode you must survive with the gdi and other windowed dx apps so things get tricky). let the user decide the texture quality, and you wont have too much to worry about. just make sure that your design it for your card, and it runs well. for lower end cards drop the texture sizes to compensate for less vram. as for vextex buffers, well try not to make the total amount used be greater then a reasonable amount of vram. unfortunatly i cant give that magic percentage, because i would not know a good one and dont want to lead you astray.

That info on available memory isn''t of much use anyway. Even if it''s exact, there is no way you can know before hand how many textures of a given size can be fit in X bytes. There is simply no way, because the way DX manages it.

So, don''t mind too much

For most memory you use, you should tell D3D to manage it as needed. This way, you don''t need to worry about it. D3D will move things in and out of memory as needed, and does it very well too.
