On the main screen of my new Ti-89 i type "56/3" and it give me an answer in fraction form, which is "56/3", however i want it in decimal form. How do i do that?

If this was a riddle I''d say you put:

56/2|>Frac

Press the "MODE" button. NEXT!

Type 56/3 then hit the green button with the diamond near the top left of the calculator then hit enter.

A quick way is to put a period after one of the numbers: "56./3 or 56/3." Or you can go to one of the menus (I forget which one), and select "approx(" and put your expression in there: "approx(56/3)"
