I''m curious about the ASCII standard: Are the characters placed in the same places in every country? Is the ASCII index for "a" the same in the U.S. and in Finland, for example? And do characters like "ä" or "ê" exist in every table?

Don'' bother learning that. Standards are too confusing.

Yes, they are the same codes everywhere

Although ASCII is very limited. If you''re thinking of a good international support you might wanna try UNICODE

But if I''m programming in Windows, won''t only Ascii be supported? Or can I "select" UNICODE as standard?

Of course windows supports unicode

Just go to your project settings and define UNICODE in the preprocessor

Now you have to be careful, you will need to use wchar instead of char (wide characters)
And you will need stuff like T"your string" for making a multibyte string for unicode support

There are a lot of documents on MSDN on how to add internationalization support to your program. I can give you a hint: It''s a bit messy.

That depends on the version of Windows.
