ROG Xbox Ally X20 adds OLED screen, control upgrades
Asus is preparing a new ROG Xbox Ally X20 for the holiday season, and the headline change is the display. The handheld grows from 7 inches to 7.4 inches, keeps 1080p, and adds HDR, Dolby Vision, FreeSync Premium Pro, and a much brighter 1400-nit panel with anti-glare coating. That puts it closer to the Steam Deck OLED and the larger Switch 2 screen than the original Ally line.
For developers, the main takeaway is that the premium handheld bar keeps rising: better HDR, higher brightness, and VRR make it easier to justify more ambitious handheld presentation targets, but only for a niche slice of the market. The control update matters too: magnetic TMR thumbsticks should reduce drift and wear compared with the original carbon-film potentiometers, and the new lift-and-twist D-pad could be relevant for games that still care about precise directional input. Asus is positioning this as a collector-style upgrade rather than a new baseline, so it’s more a signal of where handheld hardware is...
