Sony cuts 292 jobs at Destiny maker Bungie
Sony Interactive Entertainment is eliminating 292 positions at Bungie, with most of the cuts landing on the Destiny team and some affecting Marathon staff. The reduction also includes some Sony support roles tied to the studio, making this a broader restructuring than a simple project trim.
For developers, the important signal is that Bungie is being resized around a narrower set of priorities. Destiny 2 development is winding down, while Marathon remains active and Sony says it will continue supporting the extraction shooter plus future projects that are still early in development. That suggests the studio is being reoriented rather than shut down, but with far less headcount than before.
Sony says the decision came after months of reviewing Bungie’s long-term direction, development priorities, resource needs, and role within the wider PlayStation portfolio. A WARN filing with Washington State’s Employment Security Department puts the total at 292 layoffs. In May, Bloomberg reported that Bungie was already preparing significant cuts, so this has been building for a while.
The backdrop matters: PlayStation bought Bungie for $3.6 billion in 2022, then wrote down $765 million of that value in its 2025/26 financial year. Sony had also previously indicated it could take full control if Bungie missed post-acquisition financial targets, which makes these cuts part of a larger pressure cycle around the studio’s performance and autonomy.
“This is painful news, especially for talented colleagues whose roles have been eliminated.”
