Custom SRP 7.0.0 Unity 6.5

Briefing

Unity 6.5 forces a few practical changes for custom Scriptable Render Pipeline work. The first blocker is backbuffer import: rendering fails until ImportBackbuffer is called with a RenderTargetInfo struct that spells out width, height, volumeDepth, msaaSamples, and the target format. For camera targets that means using the camera’s pixel dimensions, a 2D depth of 1, no MSAA, and either the render texture’s GraphicsFormat or the standard R8G8B8A8_UNorm for the framebuffer.

Once rendering is restored, Unity also warns that renderer list culling is no longer supported. In practice that means RenderGraphParameters should stop enabling rendererListCulling, and passes like skybox and gizmos no longer need explicit AllowPassCulling(false) workarounds. The net effect is simpler code, but also a change in how empty renderer lists are handled inside the graph.

The bigger cleanup is around light probe proxy volumes. LPPV support is now dead for SRPs, so the MeshBall example drops its LPPV fields, draw-call usage flags, scene components, and related shader branches. GI.hlsl is simplified to use spherical harmonics and baked shadow masks directly, while UnityPerDraw loses the old probe-volume constants. That also means fragment-level blending of probe-based GI is gone for now; Adaptive Probe Volumes is the intended replacement.

The upgrade finishes by removing deprecated shadow settings that had already been superseded elsewhere, including the old cascade blend mode and separate filter mode fields. For teams maintaining custom SRPs, this is a good reminder that Unity 6.5 is not just...

“It is now required that we explicitly provide information about the render target we're importing.”

— Unity 6.5 migration note · Backbuffer import now needs RenderTargetInfo
