Sony to discontinue physical discs for new games launching on PS consoles from January 2028
Sony is drawing a hard line under physical media for new PlayStation releases: from January 2028 onward, new games launching on PS consoles will be digital-only. Existing disc releases are unaffected, but anything shipping after that date will move through the PlayStation Store and other digital retailers instead of pressed discs.
The practical takeaway for developers is that the last major console platform with a broad physical pipeline is moving further toward a download-first business. That changes how teams think about launch logistics, retail relationships, packaging, and the economics of manufacturing and distribution. It also reinforces the need to treat digital storefront performance, regional pricing, and live ops cadence as core parts of release planning rather than secondary concerns.
Sony says the move follows consumer preference, and the numbers back that up: nearly four in five full-game purchases on PS4 and PS5 were digital over the past financial year. The company also framed the transition as a way to align resources with how players already buy games, while still leaving room for retail sales where they make sense.
There’s a broader industry pattern here. PlayStation and Xbox already sell digital-only consoles, Nintendo has experimented with Game-Key Cards, and major releases like GTA 6 are going download-only. At the same time, physical sales haven’t vanished entirely, with Switch 2 hardware helping US boxed sales tick up briefly last year. The long tail of discs may persist for a while, but the direction of travel is clear.
