GTA 6 download codes will expire 170 days after launch in Japan

Briefing

Grand Theft Auto 6’s physical release strategy now has a hard regional wrinkle: in Japan, the game’s download codes will stop working 170 days after launch, on May 8, 2027. Rockstar’s support page ties the limit to regional regulations, so Japanese customers buying boxed copies are effectively buying a time-limited redemption path rather than a traditional disc-based install.

The underlying issue is Japan’s Payment Services Act, enforced by the Financial Services Agency. The rule requires digital code sellers to reserve funds in case the company goes out of business, but that requirement does not apply to products that expire in under six months. That makes the 170-day window a compliance-driven cutoff rather than a content or service decision.

For developers and publishers, this is a useful reminder that physical distribution is no longer a single global template. SKU design, redemption flow, regional storefront rules, and reserve requirements can all affect whether a boxed product ships with a disc, a code, or a hybrid setup. Those choices also influence support burden, resale expectations, and how clearly expiration terms need to be communicated at retail.

The timing is notable too: Rockstar had already said GTA 6’s physical copies would include a download code rather than a disc, and Sony has since moved to end physical disc production for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028. Even as the industry keeps shifting toward digital, this case shows that local regulation can still override the cleanest global packaging plan.
