A New Look for Reforj: Explore the World’s Stunning Rixel Transformation

Briefing

Reforj’s latest update is a full visual reset built around a new asset system called Rixels. Instead of relying on square pixels or the game’s older faceted look, the new approach uses up to 23 geometric shapes, each with its own material properties such as metallic and roughness values. The result is meant to preserve readability while pushing the world toward a sharper, more expressive style.

The interesting part for developers is that this started as a practical fix for a common voxel-style problem: diagonal lines and fine details getting fuzzy or inconsistent. The art and engineering teams spent roughly six months iterating on a solution that combines vector-inspired techniques with custom block shapes, and that technical work became the basis for the game’s new art direction rather than just a behind-the-scenes optimization.

The storage win is substantial. A texture that previously needed a 512×512 image at around 4MB can now be represented in about 72KB, which the team puts at a 98.2% reduction. That kind of savings matters because it lowers the cost of shipping more content, experimenting with more materials, and keeping future updates flexible without ballooning asset size.

Title Update 8 is already in the preview build through the Xbox Insider Hub on Xbox Series X|S, and the team is actively asking for bug reports, visual feedback, and performance notes. For artists and graphics programmers, this is a useful example of a technical constraint turning into a broader style shift; for producers, it’s a reminder that asset representation choices can have direct...
