Hard Work Pays off as Shard Squad Comes to XBOX
Shard Squad is now available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox on PC, with Xbox Play Anywhere support included at launch. The game comes from Brazilian studio The Root Studios and publisher Nuntius Games, marking a major milestone for a first-time release that has been in the works for months.
At its core, Shard Squad is a bullet heaven roguelite built around elemental monster squads, readable on-screen chaos, and run-to-run experimentation. Players recruit more than 20 playable Shards, stack over 90 relics, and lean on synergy systems tied to element, appearance, and relationships between characters. On Xbox, every Shard also gets the Prime Evolution system, which adds an in-run evolution path, new visuals, and stronger techniques.
What stands out for developers is the studio’s emphasis on character identity as a gameplay driver rather than a cosmetic layer. The team built relationships between Shards — friends, family, rivals, and story connections — so players choose based on attachment as well as power. That approach is especially relevant in a genre where readability, build variety, and retention often depend on how quickly players can understand and care about their options.
The launch is also a reminder that smaller regional teams can still land on major platforms with a clear design hook and disciplined content structure. For studios building roguelites, the practical takeaway is straightforward: strong synergies, evolving builds, and memorable characters can do a lot of heavy lifting when the core loop is already familiar.
