Konami's Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls to be taken offline next month

Briefing

Konami has set Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls to go offline on September 3, with the Apple Arcade version being removed from the service on August 20. After that date, the game will no longer be playable, ending its run across iOS, tvOS, iPadOS, and Mac.

The game’s history is unusually tangled for a live mobile title. It first launched in September 2019 as a free-to-play release in Canada on iOS and Android, was discontinued a year later, then returned through Apple Arcade in September 2021. That relaunch stripped out in-game currency and microtransactions, revised the layout, and improved the graphics, making it a cleaner premium-style experience for subscribers.

For developers, this is another reminder that platform strategy and service design can matter as much as content updates. A title can survive a monetization reset and a platform shift, but if the business case no longer holds, the end state is still a hard shutdown. The exact operational reasons haven’t been disclosed, but the timeline is now fixed and players have only a short window left.

Grimoire of Souls is also part of a broader wave of online game shutdowns, alongside Mario Kart Tour in September, Looney Tunes: World of Mayhem in October, and Destruction AllStars in November. For teams shipping live games, the practical takeaway is familiar: plan early for deprecation, communicate clearly, and assume any service-dependent design will eventually need an exit path.
