Double Fine Productions regains ownership of IP and publishing rights following independence from Xbox
Double Fine Productions has taken back ownership of its intellectual property and publishing rights now that it’s operating independently from Xbox Game Studios. Tim Schafer said the studio’s older releases are still in the process of being updated, but the practical shift is clear: sales now flow directly back to Double Fine rather than through Microsoft’s publishing structure.
The studio is pairing that independence with a new Amnesia Fortnight event, its fifth, under the banner “Indie Reboot: A Double Fine Productions Game Jam Documentary and Kickstarter Campaign.” The event begins on August 31 and will let backers help choose which ideas become four prototypes, with one of those eventually becoming a small full game.
This matters because Double Fine is trying to build financial runway after the split from Xbox and the layoffs that followed. Schafer said the Kickstarter is meant to buy the studio time and stability while it works on other projects, and the team has already cut 23 positions as part of the transition.
For developers, it’s a reminder that studio independence changes more than branding: it affects publishing control, revenue flow, and the ability to self-fund experimental work. The involvement of 2 Player Productions also suggests the studio is leaning into the documentary/Kickstarter model that has historically helped it turn prototypes into shippable projects.
“When people buy our games, it supports the studio.”
