Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy – A New Chapter with Action and… a Minotaur? | Official XBOX Podcast
Asobo Studio is using Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy to push the franchise into action territory without abandoning its historical-fantasy identity. The new game moves the timeline back before the Hugo and Amicia arc and centers on Sophia, who was introduced in A Plague Tale: Requiem. That choice gave the team a familiar character with enough narrative room to build a fresh chapter around her.
The biggest design shift is combat. Instead of the series’ usual stealth-first structure, Resonance is built around reactive, agile melee encounters where Sophia can fight multiple enemies directly. Asobo says the goal was to make the player feel aggressive rather than defensive: blocking has no stamina cost, but health is regained by killing enemies, so the combat loop pushes constant forward momentum. The studio also added tools like a grappling hook, throwable bottles, and daggers to support that pace.
The team described this as its first full combat game, which meant a lot of iteration and outside reference work. Ghost of Tsushima was cited as a key benchmark for the kind of responsiveness and readability they wanted, then adapted to fit Sophia’s smaller frame and the game’s one-against-many encounters. That kind of systems tuning matters: when a studio known for stealth pivots to melee, the feel of hit reactions, recovery windows, and risk-reward balance becomes the whole game.
Narratively, Resonance is also leaning into Greek mythology, with a minotaur, labyrinth motifs, and a glowing thread-like visual language. Asobo says it grounds the fantasy in real historical sites...
