Geralt Returns in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past and Remastered

Briefing

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered lands on Xbox Series X|S on September 29 as a free upgrade for existing owners, bringing a substantial refresh rather than a simple resolution bump. CD Projekt Red is updating textures, lighting, shadows, and ray tracing, with the goal of making the open world feel more natural and contemporary while preserving the original game’s identity.

The bigger design changes are in how the game plays. Combat and traversal are being modernized with smoother animations, a more adaptive camera, and new finishers. The most invasive change is progression: skill trees and character building have been reworked from the ground up, with new perks, revised abilities, and a redesigned structure intended to make builds more flexible and intuitive for a modern RPG audience.

There are also practical platform-facing additions that matter to developers and modders. Cross-platform mod support is coming to Xbox Series X|S, alongside expanded photo mode options and Xbox Play Anywhere support across console, PC, and supported handhelds. Owners of the base game on Xbox also get Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine for free, including Xbox One players, which is a notable value move for a title this old.

Separately, Geralt is getting a new expansion in 2027, Songs of the Past, set in the new realm of Letten and built around a darker story, new monsters, new mutagens, and the return of the chain as a combat weapon. For teams watching long-tail live support, this is another example of how a mature RPG can be recontextualized with systemic updates, mod infrastructure,...

“The entire system has been reimagined.”
