Fable: Find Out How Combat Works After Our First Hands-on

Briefing

Playground Games has finally put Fable’s combat in front of press and creators, and the big takeaway is that the reboot is aiming for breadth without burying players in menus. The demo, set in a quest called Mud and Death, used a haunted mine full of Hollow Folk, Wraiths, and a Lantern Keeper mini-boss to show how melee, ranged, and spellcasting are meant to interlock.

The combat model is a clear evolution of the classic Strength, Skill, and Will setup. Weapons and spells are mapped to a compact controller scheme, with melee on the face of the fight, ranged for weak spots and safer pressure, and magic for control, mobility, and burst. The loadout examples shown — from a two-handed Bower Hammer and Deepwood Bow to a Repeater Crossbow and a full spell bar — suggest the game is pushing meaningful build variety without demanding complex input overhead.

Several spells stood out as especially systemic. Lift and Push are obvious crowd-control tools, Rush adds verticality and repositioning, and Befowl turns enemies into chickens, including undead chickens when used on skeletons. That kind of spell design is doing more than adding flavor: it creates encounter-solving options, combo routes, and likely a lot of tuning work around enemy density, cooldown pacing, and how much control the player can exert over the battlefield.

The enemy mix also hints at the kind of combat pressure Playground wants. Hollow Folk can be armored, ranged, or melee-focused; Wraiths can possess other enemies and escalate fights; and the Lantern Keeper combines flight, unblockable fire breath, projectiles,...

“There’s no fussing with menus or loadout bars.”
