Serious Sam: Shatterverse – A Brand New Take on a Classic
Serious Sam: Shatterverse is being positioned as a fresh branch for the series rather than a straight nostalgia play. Behaviour Interactive says it rebuilt the classic Serious Sam feel in Unreal Engine, then layered in roguelite structure to capture the replay loop, score chasing, and unpredictable encounters that defined the older games.
The design target is broad accessibility without flattening the skill ceiling. The team wanted something longtime fans would recognize immediately, but that newcomers could pick up even if they’ve never played an FPS or a roguelike. That pushed the game toward clear systems, strong run-to-run variety, and a structure that rewards mastery without demanding prior franchise knowledge.
Multiplayer and longevity were also central to the pitch. Shatterverse uses peer-to-peer multiplayer instead of dedicated servers and includes an offline solo mode, with the explicit aim of keeping the game playable years down the line. Behaviour also says the game is launching as a complete, standalone release at a $19.99 price point, while leaving room for expansions and DLC rather than live-service dependence.
The game is tied to Serious Sam’s 25th anniversary and leans on the series’ signature ingredients: huge enemy waves, big bosses, backpedaling gunplay, and a mix of classic and new weapons and enemies. Behaviour says multiple beta playtests have already shaped the game, and the core audience has responded well to the idea of a Serious Sam that can be shared easily with friends and new players alike.
“We wanted to create a game that longtime fans would immediately recognize, but that a younger audience ... could jump into just as easily.”
