Steam achievements for unreleased and unannounced games leak on aggregators such as Exophase and SteamDB
GamesIndustry.biz reports that a Valve bug exposed Steam achievement data for unreleased and unannounced games after the platform’s weekly maintenance window. Automated collectors such as Exophase and SteamDB then picked up entries that should have remained private, surfacing names like Fable, Persona 6, Kingdom Hearts 4, and Control Resonant.
For developers, this is less about trophies and more about metadata hygiene. Achievement lists can reveal project existence, platform timing, and sometimes design intent long before a public reveal, which makes any API exposure a risk for marketing plans, spoiler control, and partner confidentiality.
Exophase owner Mike Bendel said the issue was an error on Valve’s side rather than a traditional data breach, noting that games with achievements that should be private were accessible through the API and therefore scanned into the site. Gematsu also identified additional affected titles, including Gears of War: E-Day, Ace Combat 8, and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis.
Valve has been contacted for further information. The incident lands while the company is already dealing with scrutiny after confirming a separate breach involving European Steam hardware customers through CEVA Logistics, underscoring how much operational trust hangs on backend systems that most players never see.
