Sega and Netflix announce partnership to develop Crazy Taxi, Sonic, and Stranger Than Heaven adaptations
GamesIndustry.biz reports Sega and Netflix have formed a multi-title partnership that pushes three very different Sega properties into new formats. The first project is a Crazy Taxi film, with The Naked Gun reboot writers Dan Gregor and Doug Mand attached and Sonic franchise producers Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, and Toru Nakahara producing.
Stranger Than Heaven is also getting a live-action crime film adaptation, produced by Nakahara. On the animation side, Sonic is set to gain a new series for an upper pre-school audience, joining Sonic Prime, which premiered in 2022.
For developers, the interesting part is less the IP list and more the spread of adaptation targets: feature film, live-action crime, and kids animation all under one partnership. That suggests Sega and Netflix are treating the catalogue as a long-term transmedia pipeline rather than a one-off licensing play.
Netflix continues to build out a sizable games-to-screen slate, and Sega’s brands fit neatly into that strategy. The practical takeaway for studios is that recognizable game IP is still being repackaged aggressively across age brackets and formats, which keeps adaptation work, brand stewardship, and audience targeting firmly in play.
