XBox Wire says Sea of Thieves Season 21 is rolling out alongside Talk Like a Pirate Day, and the biggest immediate hook is a free play weekend from September 17 at 15:00 UTC through September 21 at 17:00 UTC. During that window, the game is free to install and play across supported platforms without an Xbox Game Pass subscription, which should help Rare fill the seas with new crews and returning players.

The new Parley Pennant is the most interesting gameplay-facing addition here: once raised from the ship’s flag box, it signals nearby pirates that your crew is open to conversation. That could mean forming alliances, coordinating challenges, or just making contact before things inevitably go sideways. Crews that use it during the in-game event can also earn Parley Proficiency Sails.

Microsoft is layering in a separate rewards push as well, including the Golden Legends Sweepstakes from September 17 through October 31 in the US, Canada, Mexico, UK, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. Players can enter via Bing wallpapers or Microsoft Rewards points for a chance at a Golden Legends Xbox Series X, matching controller, and a year of Xbox Game Pass Premium, with additional controllers and subscriptions as regional second-place prizes.

Season 21 also brings a refreshed seasonal track, regular events like Fight Nights and Bilge Rats Weekenders, continued expansion of Custom Seas, and Xbox 25th anniversary bonuses.
